What if We Just Throw It?

The "game within a game" scenario was used. Bray could have broken records if Chaney and Dooley weren't classy guys. And they wanted more preparation for future run plays against better opponents

We have to be able to run. I agree that when we get the balance the holes will open up. I feel very confident in our passing game. If we can keep the defense honest with our running game then I expect a pretty good season. The other teams in the East are not the best in college football right now. I think Bray will give us a chance to be in every game at the end. I dont see us getting beat bad by anyone this year.

I'm not convinced we can't run the ball if we open up the whole playbook. But let's forget that for a moment.

Has anyone noticed that:

1. Tyler Bray has a NFL-strong and pinpoint accurate arm.
2. Our receivers are exceptionally good.

Had we thrown the ball 40 times instead of 25 it would have been embarassing.

Why not pass first, run second?

That can be done. Anything to get the run game going.

It doesn't matter.

You play to your strengths. If throwing 40 times is what is best for the team, you need to do it.

Ideally you like to be fairly balanced. If the same rushing game keeps showing up though they'll have no choice but to pass more.

They could have thrown at will on Sat and run up 70pts, but would that have helped the team? Instead, they got a lead and started working on the weakest aspect of the offense. They've got a ton of film to use to instruct the line and the backs. Can't lay all of Saturdays running ills on the line. Poole is a good back, but he didn't do the line any favors Saturday.

I think the staff made the best use of a game against an overmatched opponent.

If you don't have at least a credible threat of a running game, just throwing will get you killed against even average teams. Ends start teeing off on pass rush, etc. If Tennessee can't avg around 140-150 yds rushing, it's in trouble.

Also, against good teams, there will be times when they know you are running and you still need to get a yard or two. You must be able to get those yards if you want to win.

Actually we've already established that he's effective against par competition (SC and NC last year) so I'm not worried.

But to answer the OP's question: No, we shouldn't just throw. We'll never even smell an SEC East crown without a running game.

Okay... What were the outcomes to those games?

I'd be worried then.

And if they are PAR, we play a lot better teams on our schedule.

Hasn't most every UF game gone to the team who won the run stats?

I think looking at it this way can be deceiving as it doesnt tell you what lead to the team getting the lead. The team in the lead almost always starts running more to ice the game and burn the clock so they will typically have more yards. the team catching up goes to throwing which also implies they would have fewer than normal yards

so just looking at the end game stat doesnt tell you the whole story - you really want to know what led to the win

I'm not one that believes passing the ball 40 times a game is good for Tyler's health.

Bray took 3 sacks on 24 attempts, Saturday. Our line has great potential, I just don't think they are ready to pass block that much.

A passing attempt is when the ball is thrown and is:

Complete
Incomplete
Intercepted

When the QB is sacked, there is no pass attempted. Technically, we ran a pass play 27 times with Bray under center.
