What if? The Derek Dooley Story

I do see a point to this, in all seriousness. If you remember, that '12 season was racking up some major and "high" points on the scoreboard. It was just that the defense was allowing more!
Well in case you haven’t noticed you have to play defense when the offense is not on the field.

I'm not into the drug trade, especially not meth. But, are there different brands of meth?
I'm not into trading drugs either, but I once met a former chef in Kentucky. He said, "...you have your red phosphorus, your shake and bake, and crystal." Then he rattled off his process and his recipe but I didn't pay any attention to him since all that kind of junk is of zero interest to me.

Can't tell if this is serious, but I'll bite...

I actually agree with a bit of that. Dooley's downfall was hiring a new DC that wanted to switch to a 3-4 in his 3rd year. Our offense was nasty in 2012... really fun to watch. Our defense was one of the worst I've ever seen that year.

However, if I'm not mistaken, he recruited 0 offensive linemen one year (maybe his last year), which is pretty unforgivable. In fact, I seem to recall everyone talking about how bad of a situation Jones inherited because of that very thing.

Anyway, he doesn't make that DC hire, and he might still be here... orange pants and all.

I had to go throw up

Dooley didn't recruit a single offensive lineman one year. While I'll agree that he seems to have a good offense, he also seems to lack defensive knowledge. To add insult to injury in terms of a weaker o line, many of Butch's recruits haven't panned out.

Guys, I want you all to just hear me out as this opening line may shock you. If Derek Dooley never would have been fired Tennessee would be a perennial powerhouse with at least two national championships under his regime right now. Some of you may wonder what brand of meth I am on. I assure you its nothing but good ole oxygen and water in this body. Let me at least cite 1-2 of the many reasons why this is a fact. If Derek Dooley was never fired we would have been scoring with the best of teams in the SEC. Just look at what Missouri has been doing since he took the OC position there. Meaning we would have never seen the like of Mike "cuck" Deboard or Tyson Helton. That alone is worth a few wins in itself. We would have also had stability and discipline. Derek Dooley was a hardnose, smashmouth coach who didn't take crap from anyone. He made the players learn everything from shower techniques to proper alignment on the field. The program was trending in an upward direction as Dooley hit the dusty trail. Butch didn't inherit a mess. Butch inherited a team of well rounded athletes that were prime for a title run and pissed it away. Derek Dooley catches a lot of heat for the time he spent here. I am here to say that was unjust and we should be apologetic to him. Derek Dooley, I appreciate your greatness and the amazing things you did during your tenure at Tennessee.
I agree with a lot of the above. I think maybe he was "picked a little bit before he was ripe"...but he is going to be a fine head coach in the future. imo

BTW, Missouri has won jack squat and still has won jack squat with Dooley as OC.

Just a friendly reminder. There was a ton of big talk on here last about how Missouri was a automatic W for us because no way, no how could CDD's offense beat Pruitt. Agree he was over his head as HC, but his offense laid an old fashioned butt kicking on a UT team that should have been fighting for a bowl game. They have not won jack squat in the grand scheme of things, but maybe pointing that out while being on the wrong end of 50-17 is a little premature.

That 50th ranked recruiting class in 2013 would've been the springboard, eh?

By 2014, we could've had an innovative offense with no O-linemen on the roster!

Not debating if they were better than us last year but yeah, they clearly were. However, I just do not see any big accomplishments. They went 8-5 last year and finished 4th in the east. This, IMO, equates to Jack squat.

My take has always been that Dooley was lazy or purposely sabotaged UT. Knew 3 local high school head coaches during his tenure and all told the same story. Absolutely no effort at a relationship with the high school program. One coach contacted Vols and told them he had a kid wants to go to UT AND he's a baller. Never heard squat from UT. Kid went to another SEC program and started.

I remember the Missouri game the year he was fired. I think we had 5 wins. We got the ball back around midfield with a little time left and a couple timeouts.

Dooley decided to take it to overtime and we lost.

I'm sure we would be winning NCs by now. Lol

Post is a joke, but a good troll job. DD was comically eccentric, a poor man’s Mike Leach w/o the same genius or vision. Made us a laughingstock and set us up for the Salesman who followed.

Right. You can tell how many people agree with you by the number of head coaching jobs he's held in the intervening 6 years.

Let me refresh everyone's memory:
- allowed Troy 720 yards of offense
- lost to LSU due to 13 men on the field
- completely forgot about offensive linemen one recruiting season
- failed to even score 14 points in HALF of our games in 2011
- lost to a bad, bad KY team, breaking a quarter-century streak
- Music City Meltdown
- shunned VFLs, did not establish relationships with area HS coaches
- was a general d-bag by all accounts that I've heard

OC is about as highest level I can see him being successful. Our offenses were not an issue under Dooley (how much was that him? How much was Cheney?) Hiring a DC with little experience at a lower level was a crazy hire. Especially considering everyone in the state knew it would be his job if he failed. So many stories of him not building any sort of relationships with high schools and coaches in state.

I mean, maybe with enough success as OC at Mizzou he could be a HC at a FCS school. I'm not even sure I'd hire him at a Sunbelt conference school.

We had them 4th and 12 and they score a TD on us.
