What has Lane proven

lane getting some good football players...his dad is a good coach...vol fans be patient...

Problem with this is that a portion of our fanbase still misses The Fired Coach and won't accept the fact that he is no longer the coach :banghead2::banghead2:

Okay, hes gotten a whole fan base to jump on his back, besides a few of you who actually thought this team was talented.
He coached an absolutely awful (as far as talent goes) team to a bowl game, and a decent one at that.
Hes got good players and great coaches coming in.

And most of all, he brought his wife. Nuff said.

Preach it Cagle, preach it.

Fans can complain!!!

He has proved NOTHING and if it wasn't for his Daddy wouldn't be where he is!!!

When he proves he is a winner I will admit it..

I hope your gone by then. The Vols don't need fans like you. Phil is gone, the right coach is in the driver's seat. So get on or get off, he does not have to prove anything to you or me. I will be a Vol even if Steve or Holts came here. I love my team and the state of Tennessee not the coach. GOOOOOOOOOO VOLS

How long will Vol fans put up with Kiffen playing not to be embarassed instead of playing to win? Call a running play on 3rd and 15+? Do it twice? Are you kidding me?
Fulmer would never have done this.

You're out of your mind.

Dis you see our line when VT knew a throw was coming? Did you see our first couple passes, which had to scare our playcaller to death?

Better question: why on earth am I bothering?

Not going to say we have no talent. That would not be a true statement. We have no depth thanks to terrible recruiting for two years under Fulmer and high attrition rates.

This is a 2-3 year project guys and gals. Expect something similar next year (record wise).

He has proven he can instill discipline in a program that had lost it. Don't bring up the arrests. He has had one problem in one year. He dealt with it too. He is a hard worker. He is building with a purpose. He is changing an atittude in a program that had no atittude. When we win out next NC, it won't be a fluke.

Kiffin, unfortunately, is not like his dynamic and upbeat father. Lane always looks likes he depressed or pissed. And he's terrible with the press. He looks nervous in interviews. He needs to grow a personality, or things will not go well for the boy wonder. He doesn't exude toughness.

Fulmer chose to punt with about 2 minutes left down 2 touchdowns to Cal.

Unless the press determines who wins the game, who cares?

Yeah, because he has proven to be an abject failure as a recruiter. (That was sarcasm by the way. I feel obliged to make that clear because there are truly more morons on the board in the last 48 hours than ever before.)

he won 7 games with a walk-on rich line, 3rd string linebackers, hold-up scandal in which he had to kick 2 very good recruits off the team, injuries, depth issues due to fulmer's laziness, and if he had the time to alter what fulmer did to crompton prior to the season starting we would have won 9 games this year (ucla and auburn). i'd say that's solid work for your first year in the nation's most difficult conference, and that's without mentioning that we scared florida and frightened alabama.

More so than the recruiting, he has proven that he can generate excitement around a somewhat flat program and instill belief in his players. That is a good start in my eyes; not a legendary start, but a good one. I think recruiting was number 2 and improving on last season's record is number 3.

Next year's expectations:

Improve on this year's record
Avoid negative press (both himself and his players)
Win a bowl game

Yet you just started a thread saying that we have an image problem and cited those arrest.

i never realized how many bad fans UT has until i starting reading threads on this site. some of you need to realize that tennessee simply does not have the talent they used to. give kiffin some time to get some players in here and let our excellent coaching staff do their job...
it would not have mattered if vince lombardi was coaching some of our games this year, the players failing to execute will continue to cost us games.
with the schedule we have next year and the projected talent that is going to be on the field, a 7-8 win season next year will be a success.

welcome to VN

A boring head coach doesn't instill excitement in players or draw recruits. PR is crucial. Pearl has it, Kiffin does not.
I'm laughing at the thought of Kiffin being boring. The only thing Pearl has proved is he can bring in overhyped players and not develop them.

It is a fair question. It is hard to argue that Lane was not a risky hire. He had never been a head coach in college and his brief stint in the NFL was not exactly a success. He showed up and brought in a great staff. He also showed some immaturity with several comments he made - makes.

He went 7-6. Many argue that was good for this talent. Some say if we were good enough to play Bama so close and hang for a while with UF, then why did we get beat worse by inferior teams (to uf and bama). I think the bottom line is that while we had ups and downs, we finished about where our talent level dictated.

As for Lane, only time will tell. I think it is too early for anyone to know how this will turn out. This season was not an incredible result but it wasn't a bad one either. Ironically, this thread about what he has proven is correct. He has not proven much of anything, but then again, he has not had the team to prove much of anything.

I'm not convinced he is in the same league with Meyer or Saban, but I hope my gut is wrong. And while I don't see Lane making us a Texas, Florida or Bama, I do think that he will recruit well enough to help us be a legit threat in this conference. Nobody knows right now and we probably won't know until 2011. I hope Vol fans are patient enough to get past next season so we can at least find out if he was deserving of this job.

In his WHOLE coaching stint???

Name one thing!

And it cant be the turn around of JC...many kids just come out of their shell happens all the time.

you honestly can't be serious. The only reason we are 7 and 6 is this coaching staff. The fulmer regime left our program with a gap in talent compared to other schools. He took the #1 team down to the wire 2x this season. He recruited a top 10 class and is well on his way to another top 10 or maybe a top 5.
