It is a fair question. It is hard to argue that Lane was not a risky hire. He had never been a head coach in college and his brief stint in the NFL was not exactly a success. He showed up and brought in a great staff. He also showed some immaturity with several comments he made - makes.
He went 7-6. Many argue that was good for this talent. Some say if we were good enough to play Bama so close and hang for a while with UF, then why did we get beat worse by inferior teams (to uf and bama). I think the bottom line is that while we had ups and downs, we finished about where our talent level dictated.
As for Lane, only time will tell. I think it is too early for anyone to know how this will turn out. This season was not an incredible result but it wasn't a bad one either. Ironically, this thread about what he has proven is correct. He has not proven much of anything, but then again, he has not had the team to prove much of anything.
I'm not convinced he is in the same league with Meyer or Saban, but I hope my gut is wrong. And while I don't see Lane making us a Texas, Florida or Bama, I do think that he will recruit well enough to help us be a legit threat in this conference. Nobody knows right now and we probably won't know until 2011. I hope Vol fans are patient enough to get past next season so we can at least find out if he was deserving of this job.
