What happened?? (Speculation encouraged)

The D game plan was predicated to stopping the run, something SC had tried to establish all year. SC came out throwing, the D couldn’t adjust. They tried man and zone, blitzing, and the old keep everything in front of you D. They were not the more physical team and played on their heels all night. At some point, somebodies gotta step up and make a play, they didn’t.

Banks and Martinez must go. The kids are not being coached well enough to have a chance to win consistently in the sec.

The folks that are saying certain coaches need to go I have a question. Should Rodney Garner be fired? Our defensive line got absolutely no pressure on Rattler last night which led to a lot of the completed passes. Deion Sanders couldn’t cover a receiver that long. I personally hope we can keep the staff together for another year. By the way I think ‘Rodney Garner has got about as much as he can other players he has to work with.
Jimmy and joes matter as much as x and o

Terrible defensive game plan. Also saw too many damn players running their mouths and getting chippy for no reason at all..

If I was Heupel, I'd be hard pressed not to send Hadden to the damn house..
I agree! I was at the game and he ran his mouth the entire game. Don’t understand chirping after giving up a 15 yard gain! Secondary was absolutely pathetic! Receivers running open all night! Watching it in person was hard to take!

This game was a perfect storm of everything we already knew. The offense is good, but twitchy on the road if things don’t go well early.

The defense can’t cover and can’t pressure the QB. When they play an accurate throwing QB, which Rattler may or may not really be, but he sure as heck was last night, they are going give up massive chunks of yardage.

The CJH system covers a lot of warts, but it can’t cover them all. This team is just plain horrible on D. I’ll allow some blame on the coaches, but defense is reactive. It demands more natural football instinct and athleticism than does offense. We just don’t have that. We’re about 6-8 guys away on that side.

Something was very off with this defense tonight with Jeremy Banks out.

They haven't been great by any stretch but they haven't shown the complete lack of effort like we saw tonight this season.

Exactly. People saying “well our defense has been bad all year”…..this was beyond bad to a sh*t team. I’m really starting to believe the defense layed down because of some locker room disputes.

I can't stand that bullsh!t period, even when you make a play. High five your closest teammate, and then get your ass ready for the next play..

I don't see it as a lack of preparation. I see it as a talent problem. We've got an average DL at best. LB and DB's aren't even average. Some of them don't belong in the SEC. Coaches can teach and prepare, but when you don't have the athletes to execute, there's nothing any coach can do.

You think SCAR has better athletes?

It’s almost like someone told the team an hour before kick that we’re shutting the program down next year- but hey go make us proud and win these next two games. Moping, slow jogging, standing back on tackles, waiting for the runner to get to us, and a whole lot of spectating. That’s lack of desire and regardless of scheme if you don’t have the will to fight nothing else matters. And we damn sure ain’t got it

Yep.

Aside from scheme issues ( played too much zone IMO and really never committed to pressuring Rattler) , these guys looked mostly disinterested from the opening snap.

Didn't see the gang tackling and hustle out of the LBs and secondary. Sure, Rattler was throwing darts early but they just never responded.

At one point, I thought Beasley was screaming at some of the other guys on the field.

Pretty much all the comments on this thread are part of the reason we lost last night. It looked to me to be that perfect storm. Two years into a rebuild and #1/#5 ranking was a setup. Playing on the road in the SEC is tough, especially as the injuries mount up. South Carolina had nothing to lose and backs against the wall like we were with Bama. I believe we need to focus on what will make us better and that is faster, tougher, and smarter players in the secondary. We need to be able to rotate 2-3 at every position with minimal loss of talent and experience. At this point, not sure coaching is the reason we are inconsistent. Obviously not having our leading linebacker and QB not putting the ball where it can be caught are two huge problems. So, I love the Vols. Looking forward to Vandy and Bowl game. Work harder, get better soon. Especially praying for those injured.
