Does a change in environment thru the transfer portal really help many players? So many of these young guys appear to be quite indecisive -- flipping around to so many schools. This was not the case years ago. You just want them to settle down and make firm decisions.

That's a great point. I have not heard any mention of ineligibility issues due to grades. Not like in the old days when you were on edge around this time waiting to see who was going to qualify.I seem to remember people like you are referring to usually ran into grades.. You know what the word "student athlete" stood for. Have not heard one single reference to "transcript" problems, let alone grade deficiency since college football turned "pro".
Schools realized these kids make too much money for the universities. Some professor making $60,000 a year gonna keep a kid off the field that helps bring millions into the university and community? Not a chance anymore. I mean, Auburn keeps all their players eligible. Auburn! That's a great point. I have not heard any mention of ineligibility issues due to grades.
