What does it matter to a player who stays with the program during the sanctions and someone who bolts to another school? Is it really negative for the players or does it not matter in the end?

I think it’s situational and case by case.

Eric Gray- I get it. This is year 3 removed from HS and, with another big year he could be primed for the NFL draft. With all of the uncertainty at UT and the exodus of players, who really knows what we’ll look like in 2021. OU is going to put up big offensive numbers and a pretty talent rich roster going against B12 defenses.......would I do it? Nope. Do I get it....yeah, unfortunately.

Cimaglia(might be misspelling)- that is the stuff that irks me. Senior....are you really increasing your odds of landing on an NFL roster by going elsewhere? And maybe I’m just a grumpy old man but it aggravates me to see his lovey-dovey post about how much UT means to you......Thanks for the last few years, good luck, but don’t play it fake on social media. If TN meant that much why are you leaving? Is it boosting NFL odds?

I have no issue with dudes transferring FCS or lower level either. I think the bigger problem is that many of the guys were here for the $$$. May have liked UT okay but are out for #1. $$$ gone, he’s gone

The players need to do what is best for them regarding short-term and long-term goals. The uncertainty regarding the coaching changes definitely impacts their decision whether it is the HC, OC/DC or position coaches.

Playing football in college is not the same as a career after college, but would you accept a job offer without having met the manager (position coach) or even that person’s manager (OC/DC)?

For a junior or senior with NFL aspirations, the penalties can be significant. They want to play on every big stage they possibly can. Taking away the post-season is a disadvantage. Taking away talent around them (because football is never a one-man game) is a disadvantage. Starting over installing a new offense and defense removes an obstacle to transferring (since they'd be learning a new system whether they stay or go). So going to a school that provides a better platform can be a very smart decision.

Second: playing for championships can be hugely important to some players, can even be their #1 goal. Having all chances taken away for one or more years can be a deal-breaker, for freshmen and seniors alike.

Third: loyalty, to a fellow player who is leaving, or to a coach that got fired or let go, that can drive a young man away in a form of protest.

Finally: avoiding penalties and stigma can be big, for a kid who was personally involved in some rule-breaking.

So any player who leaves, I'd look first at those four motivations. Along with other more normal reasons, like a chance to get closer to home.

Most would agree some of the transfers were caused by funds to them being cut off or the fact they will be implicated in a NCAA investigation.
If the kids were promised pay and had been receiving payments you can't blame them for leaving when the money stops. I never worked very long without getting paid.

I think there is more to it than meets the eye. With such apparent widespread violations taking place it is hard to believe that many of the players did not know anything about the infractions. Gray in particular was not allowed to play and they refused to say what it was about, then it hit the fan.

Many of these players are getting out of dodge before they get caught up in the investigation, but it may just follow them to their new school. The NCAA has a longer arm and can still reach out and touch them.

The player will have to adjust to a whole new staff whether they stay or go. Why not go play at a school that will actually be competitive with a staff that is stable and has proven they can put guys in the league?

Consider also the likelihood that UT just won’t be that good. We’ll be lucky to get anything but noon games. If you want exposure on a big stage? This is not the place for you.

Two grown ass, already wealthy men just left a whole athletic department and all those football players at UCF in the lurch. No one questions their “loyalty”. After what’s gone on here at UT the last dozen years, UT is lucky any parent would allow their kid to come here.

Is loyalty gone away these days? From both players and coaches?

It certainly matters for Tennessee.

If you can bring in 25.

You have an incoming class of say 18.

Now the most you could land from transfers, JR college or whatever is 7.

Now if you have 20 players leave......then your short 13 players.

Players need to do what is best for them....for the most part. However back in the day many kids signed up for a school......not necessarily for a coach.

Many players now days just aren’t in it for the school.....that’s ok, they need to worry about themselves.....for sure......however it leads to not as much of a “team” aspect many times.

I think, yeah, every man for himself, for the most part. The Matt Campbell’s of the world are hard to find these days. He stayed at Toledo for 5 years. He took over an Iowa State team that had won only 8 games combined the three seasons prior to his arrival. They had only finished in the AP top 25 twice in school history, last time 21 years ago. In his 5th season they finished 9th.

He could have taken a job, he’s making 3.5 million there.

Hell we paid almost twice that to UCF. We paid Kevin Steel a cool million to babysit for 2 weeks. Throw in about another 2 million to Weinke and Chaney and we’ve run up about a 9 million dollar tab. For what? Hope?

Sorry, loyalty, seems pretty rare these days. A lot of lip service about teaching kids how to be men. The lesson seems to be chase the money. Chase the dream. Then people crap on the players when they do the same.

Sorry for the rant. GBO!

The bottom line is NO ONE WANTS TO PLAY FOR A LOSER.
Now, add NCAA sanctions and penalties to that losing program. Add bowl bans, scholarship reductions, TV bans. I do not blame any players for leaving this program. I have no delusions of loyalty, for any current player, or any of the incoming players. I wish them all the best, wherever they wind up.
