What Do You Do for a Living?

I am a musician in the US Navy. Currently stationed with the US Navy Band in Washington, DC. I emcee concerts for the concert band and am the vocal soloist as well. Also, I emcee ceremonies for military dignitries in the DC area. Additionally I act in the role of producer for the band, putting together shows for the general public as well as broadcasts to ships at sea. Definately an interesting job.

Sweet. I lived in DC for a short while (summer) back in 2002 - I loved catching the navy band down by the Washington Monument...and I went to another concert, but I can't remember where that was. You guys/gals were/are good.

Tidwell that wasn't my intent.I have 3 boys close to your age and I always talk smack with them.I can tell by your post you are a smart kid.As far as what you are doing now and what the future holds is up to you.My wife didn't even go to college until she was 30.I remember in high school she worked at the local hamburger joint, actually cleaned roms at motels for a while. Now she's an RN/Excecutive and makes alot of cabbage. If your'e happy with your job, more power to you.If your not,let me know and I'll try to pull some strings if your in East,West or Middle Tennessee.I'll leave it at that.
It's cool, I'll be OK. :peace2:

I am the crappiest and ugliest housewife in the world. I have kept the kid alive and functioning for two years, which I consider to be a pretty great accomplishment for me, but I abhor cleaning and, in spite of the fact that I'm a good cook, can't get inspired to bust out the boring weeknight meals. The boy and I sleep late, watch a little crappy children's TV while I drink coffee, and then go run around in parks. There are worse ways to spend your day, I suppose, although I can't recommend doing it with a hangover.

I'm also a distance-ed grad student at UTK in information science, which is kind of like library science married to computer science. There is no master's program in that field available in the state of Georgia, so I'm pursuing it online in the evenings from my beloved orange alma mater. Working on a master's degree while taking care of a baby has been a bigger pain than I ever would have imagined. Who would have thought that that little baby that lies still and doesn't do much would eventually turn into a kid who expects you to play with him when you've got a paper due in six hours?

I sell toilets.:)

Well, not anymore but I did for 6.5 years before moving to our company HQ last year. I work for the largest building products wholesaler in the US.

My current job is in the IT dept. as a business analyst for logistics/warehousing in charge of our distribution centers. I work on our warehouse mgmt systems to keep them running and try to keep them current. No one makes an out-of-the-box system for a company this big so we spend many hours customizing for our facilities. I'm not much of a programmer but do a little when needed. I'm more like the guy from office space who takes the specs from the customers and gives them to the programmers. I translate business speak into geek speak.

I am the numero uno mobile electronics guy at Best Buy in Tualatin, OR. Basically, I get paid to stand around, sell decks, speakers, amps, screens, etc. to more employees than customers (employee discount) and then hook myself up on the mad cheap. I can get myself a full custom soundsystem for the same price it takes the rest of you fools to buy a deck and a pair of 6x9's :)

Work in the Defense Contracting industry for one of the big boys on the block. Or at least top 5 from what I understand. Our contract maintains and supports Soldier live training. So simply what we do is make sure stuff is working while they train and get their lessons learned and certified to go off into battle. Intent is show them how to fight so lives are saved when it comes to doing for real.

Am not an engineer but rather a finance puke. Worked my way over the last decade from site level to Program Office. Deal with everything from day to day issues to strategic 5 year planning.

Our contract is up later this year and announcement for new one coming up in the next three weeks. So, in three weeks I'll know whethe I have steady employment for the next ten years or whether I need to again look for new employment. Love this business. :)

I'm a Government employee for the Air Force and am a Contract Specialist/Grants Officer for the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. We write grants/contracts for basic research with contractors and universities. I've been in Civil Service for 7 years and am a retired AF NCO. Have been retired for almost 17 years. WOW, that's a long time. Currently in the DC metro area(live near Dulles Airport) and am looking to relocate south in the near future. I've got about 7-8 more years before I can retire the 2nd time around. My military time (21 years) was in the Contracting Field too.

That was the Sylvan theatre. It has fallen into such disrepair that no one does concerts there anymore. We will be there for the 4th of July, but the Park Service is bringing in a mobile stage to put on the lawn. It's too bad, the Sylvan was a great place to do concerts. Now we are the Capitol and the Navy Memorial all summer.

Come to think of it, the announcer for the Marine Band here in DC is a UT alum as well. I didn't know him at UT, but we both studied with George Bitzas.

Hey UTSailor - my cousin's son is also in the Navy band. He's HQ'd out of Memphis. I know he does some soundboard work for them and also plays trombone.

He was accepted into the Academy. He's going to the prep-school next year in RI then off to the Academy.

Good for him. Getting into the Academy is not easy! He'll probably have to give up playing trombone for a while. They don't have a mid-shipman band there, just the glee club. Best of luck to him!

I am a pharmacy technician in a hospital, although you can go to school for this, I learned everything on the job and then went and took the test (to become a certified pharmacy technician) and passed. I fill outpatient prescriptions, mix iv's, mix compounds, answer phones, file papers, fill stock slips, go on runs, basically I run around like a hamster in a wheel. The down side is I have a lousy schedule but being a single mom I am fortunate to work with people who will help me out with my schedule, and I work with a great group of people.

In reality, what it boiled down to was utfantilidie trying to smack Tiddy down by proclaiming his (utfan's) son was a super smart golden boy that Tiddy could never hope to live up to.

Tiddy took it much better than I would have.
I am sure Vader you would have called me over to post junkies and given me a what for...

As much as you hassle 10Ainge10 and you want to say something to me about messing with Tidwell.Obviously Tid has a much better psychiatric disposition (understanding) than do you.He knew I was messing around.

Wow, that was fairly random.

Whoever that person is, occasionally they fly off the deep end.
If voicing your opinion and being 100% honest is your definition of deep end, then I guess I do.But,in all fairness, alot of people on hear get ticked off from time to time and say things they shouldn't have.Thats the life of the non retractable message board I suppose.I try not to take this stuff too serious anyways.:hi:

I think you are confusing me with someone else. I have never hassled 10Ainge10. I regret that I did not get your "wit". I just thought it was a low blow at the time and didn't understand how it related to the conversation at hand.

I'm a lawyer. I represent Sheriffs when they get sued for professional liability. False arrest, jail suicides, high speed pursuits that end in accidents, shooting unarmed people. That sort of thing.

I would almost like you if you weren't a gator fan:)

I am a senior parole officer for the state of Georgia. I work in an intensive drug treatment program where will deal with about 50 parolees instead of the hundreds you would have in a normal office.

I am basically a law enforcement officer, social worker, and counselor rapped up into one job. The law enforcement stuff is the most fun but seeing people actually change their lives for the better is the most rewarding.

I am also in Grad school with an eye towards getting a PhD so I can teach Criminal Justice. Unfortunately, there are no PhD programs in Georgia for Criminal Justice. The closest ones are in Maryland, Ohio and Texas. I will have to figure that one out later.

I think the prep school's purpose is for him to try and get accepted to the academy. About one third to one half of those entering the prep school, end up at the academy. It's a situation where the kids take only SAT prep style courses in Math and Verbal to get their scores high enough to get an appointment. Not a particularly easy process.

You see nothing odd about randomly calling someone out and comparing them to your son?

:dunno:
