What are your thoughts on Drew Richmond?

Many on here wanting to pounce on Richmond after 2 games. Richmond will get better as he goes, just like the Vols. People are forming opinions on many things way to early in season. As the season goes on teams will get better and worse as the year goes, most teams won't look nothing like they do know at the end of the season. Long way to go and the constant negative bashing by some is already wearing thin. It's one thing to point out where we need to improve or even mention concern. But to not realize where this program is now to when Coach Jones got here is very short cited. Can't wait for CROW to be served to many as the year goes on. It's funny I picked UT over VT 38-21 when most were picking a close game or a loss. Not bragging it could have been closer and I even mentioned that as a possibility in one of my threads leading up to the game. A few posters said well if they win like you are saying everyone will be happy, well some still aren't and some won't be if we are 5-0 heading into the Bama game. I am convinced of that. GBO!!!!! Play hard, play with confidence and focus we will be fine!!!! GO BIG ORANGE!!!!!!

He redshirted last year. LT is a tough position. I think he eventually slides in to play guard and has a decent career. I don't think he'll live up to the hype. I blame part of that on Mahoney.

I've speculated the same. Watching him play LT reminds me a bit of Dallas Thomas. He went from a bad LT, to a not so bad LT, to a pretty darn good LG over the course of his career.

Looks to be at least 1 step behind. Doesn't appear to have the agility and speed required for D1 tackle. If Jones had other options, I would expect Drew to be slid inside to guard but he doesn't. Drew has got to know he was owned by VT. Now to see if he mans up, works harder and brings his A game...

PS...I think something's up with this line that we don't know about. It strikes me as odd when Tennessee's line ,which has only 1 freshman starting, looks worse than most sunbelt teams. Long story short, I'm not sure Richmond's poor performance is completely on him.

I think he would make a great RG! Also I wonder why they haven't experimented with guys like Boulware at the tackle position too! Remember not too long ago they were telling us that our lineman would all learn multiple positions? I understand that had to do with depth but at this point if someone is underperforming then we need a pool of guys that can step in. Richmond is not the only guy that this applies to. There are other guys on the line that have underperformed. But there's about 10 threads on the O line as a whole so I'm sticking with discussion on Richmond.

Which brings me to another question: Does he have as high of a ceiling as Hall or Jones?

Great teams rarely play kids out of a small private school in the OL in their 2nd yr. DR just hasn't had the experience yet playing against these guys who are 22-23, aggressive as hell and stronger than he is. He'll be a lot better later this yr, next year and the following 2.

Everyone thinks cause a computer geek labels a kid a 5* player he's ready to go NFL in 3 yrs....its just not true.

I'm sitting here watching a replay of the game and Richmond is getting absolutely abused almost every play.

Chance Hall and Jack Jones looked world's better as true freshmen.

How about just admitting the truth? Drew Richmond simply stinks.

No reason to couch these performances with the he's a rs freshmen excuse.

Both had their moments last year as well.

The truth is that your opinions aren't above average for a fan.... in fact they're well below average and pretty ignorant.

During the VT game, they tried different combos on the OL. When Thomas was out, Richmond played better. Exactly why would probably take some candid conversations with the O coaches and review of the actual game film that the team uses. None the less, it demonstrated that DR CAN play. Being a young player, his improvement curve will likely be much steeper than an older player. Of course if you were nearly as smart as you thought you are.... you'd know this.

(Sidenote: Based on some of your earlier comments, you may be operating under the false impression that YOU have access to the same film that the team reviews. You don't. They have a film crew assigned to give them film useful for performance evaluation)

He hasn't looked great, but as others have pointed out, it always takes a while for all players, especially offensive linemen, to get their feet under them.

Regarding the offensive line in general, however, the thing that I am concerned about is a seeming inability to adjust to the wholesale stunting going on by our opponents so far. It's just not being dealt with, period, as far as I can see, and it just floors me. What gives?

Didn't Bama start 2 freshmen OL last year?

Drew is one of the nicest, most polite young man that you will ever meet.
He has a huge upside, very smart, and he will play at the next level.
I am proud that he wears the Orange.

The talent will eventually trump the lousy coaching.

Whether it is here or eventually in the NFL remains to be seen.

He has a lot of upside but needs more experience and a better OL coach.

I understand when teams blitz, there is gonna be a gap or mismatch usually and the QB will be rushed but when the team sends a three man rush and often hurries out QB. Something is wrong.

I agree and am glad to hear that! I hear that he may not be starting today but I personally don't take that to mean he won't play considering how much shuffling we've had to do. I think Drew needs to take this demotion as motivation to work on his game and help improve the other players. I believe he'll get there he's just not there yet. When will he be ready? Who knows. I won't be surprised if he's back in the starting lineup before the end of the year. He just has to get better with his technique. That's all there is to it.

I think relating to coaching may have something to do with it. Listen: I know Dobbs and Hurd racked up a lot of yards last year but they did that with an O line that missed a lot of blocks. So I give a little more credit to Dobbs and Hurd. I've said it before but it bears repeating: Jalen Hurd is the toughest RB in the country. I've never seen a guy take so many hits esp in the backfield and keep fighting for those 2-3 yards (that's 90% of our first down plays). He's often compared to Eddie George who was also a great RB. But I believe Eddie wouldn't last 4 qtrs in some of the games Hurd has endured much less a whole season! I know that's probably the OJ talking (drinking the orange juice) but it's hard to deny his toughness.

Back to coaching, I used to know our OL coaches name but for some reason it always escapes me now. That's really all I need to say. I learned it and now my brain refuses to remember it any more. I see individuals playing well on the line at times but rarely as a group. I think that coaching is involved there. When they finally start gelling as a group I'll refer to the OL coach by his name (if I remember it 😜)

I think he'll be a two year starter beginning next year opposite Hall and he'll earn a shot at playing on Sundays.
