What’s the logic

I saw where posters are tired of the same threads, so here is one y’all can rally around; maybe.

I keep reading where some fans are expecting the ship to turn around in the next two years and the Vols will be competing for the East. Looking at the level of recruiting that UGA is accomplishing, how can you possibly feel that UT is closing the gap? It looks like the gap is getting wider. Is it based on faith in Pruitt’s evaluation skills? What say you?

There is this silly narrative that every good coach turns a program around by year 3. So that means if Pruitt hasnt turned us around by year 3, then we should start looking for another coach because he isnt the guy. At TN, our fan base has a terrible disease called living in the pastitis. Many still believe that we are that same program that once called winning 9-10 games a year down years. The same program that would look at the schedule and circle Vandy, UK, SC, Missouri and Bama as automatic wins. A program loaded with talent that could dominate on both lines of scrimmage. Many think that we should be able to turn things around quickly because of nothing mire than our name. Its ridiculous.

The reality is Pruitt is going to need at the very least 4 years. Many fans dont want to hear it but we are in the beginning of a rebuild. Yeah it sucks but its fact. The past 2 head coaches at TN have absolutely driven this program into the ditch. We are nowhere close to competeing for the East. I think it will be year 5 before we will begin to think about that. And even then it may not be possible with UGA. Georgia may go on an SECE run like we have never seen before. They will easily win it next year as well.
I agree with a lot of what you say. Some of the posters on this forum seem to believe the admin should just snap its fingers and we automatically return to the late 1990s.

Sorry, it isn't likely to happen quickly, or easily. We will likely get marginally better and maybe even "good" in 3 to 4 years. But getting "good" doesn't equate to winning the eastern division given the competitive landscape. There will also be years of backsliding, recruiting busts, tougher schedule, etc.

Face it, UT rarely beat Florida even during the glory years. UF isn't going anywhere. UGA is for the foreseeable future the Alabama of the east. Tennessee has some structural disadvantages it has always had to overcome (lack of recruiting base compared to our rivals, only team in the east that has bama as a permanent opponent, Knoxville's distance from Shelby county athletes, etc.). In year's past a focused administration and AD was able to overcome these inherent obstacles. A few years of mismanagement and loss of focus, and these disadvantages loom much larger.

Right now our focus should be stabilizing the program and building up the roster. In 4 or 5 years, the AD and administration (not Volnation) will decide if Pruitt should continue to hold the reins, based on a lot of factors, including wins and losses. My guess is if Pruitt is consistently winning 8 games a season in year 4 or year 5, probably getting us to a reliable 3rd place in the east, he will get the nod to stay on, assuming he doesn't bolt for somewhere else, and assuming there is not a "big name-can't miss" proven coach who wants the job who the AD thinks can do better. As a side note, I think getting a "big name-can't miss" coach will be considerably easier once the roster is restocked and the program stablized.

We have an entitled fan base. The sense of entitlement does not match up with the realities of where the UT football program is vis-a-vis its competition. My view it is better to be realistic and get an occasional good surprise, than expect a quick turnaround because "TENNESSEE."

As always, JMHO.

Fair weather fans are pussies! Shut the **** up and go be a Georgia fan or an Alabama fan or whoever. I don't give a ****. No wonder the whole world looks at us like idiots. I'm willing to get kicked off this site defending the team I love, The Tennessee Volunteers to pathetic people that call themselves fans. Damn, I hate stupid people. The Vols will rise again! I love my team! GBO! Go Vols!

Maybe everyone is just staring at you?

I believe the thinking is beat SC, Vandy, Kentucky, and Missouri. Win your four non-conference games and go 8 and 4. That would be considered improvement beating most of the teams that never out recruit us but still beat the crap out of us. Get to beating a couple more teams like maybe Miss St, Auburn, Florida, etc may happen in year 3. Then you hope you can take like a 9 and 3 and move it up every year or two to a 10 and 2 maybe 11 and 1. That would look to be hopefully by year five of Pruitt's coaching tenure. 10 and 2 would have to be acceptable as a great season anytime we could achieve it here considering the SEC and the fact were never going to out recruit Bama or Georgia. I think we could get to a point where we might be able to beat them at home in the future, but going undefeated or one loss is not going to happen a lot as long as Saban is coaching Bama.
The 8 and 4 should be next season.

Pretty sure stuff like this also makes us “look like idiots.” Beating your chest and screaming ‘we’re TN’ doesn’t change the reality that we are NOT an elite contender. We are not even ‘middle of the road’ these days. Vandy is on a 3-game win streak. Let that sink in for a second.

CJP night right the ship but the yr 1 performance is prob a C+ or B- grade. Not a flop but not a coronation either.

It’s great to be a fan but delusional faith in anything always seems to end poorly.

It's truly sad when Vanderbilt represents the state of Tennessee far better than UT.
The way Vandy beat the Vols this year, Tennessee looks years behind, unfortunately

Yes! Our 2018 season will be quickly forgotten just like the last decade.

But, we botched the 2001 SEC Championship Game and that is one we still discuss on here.

IMO, losing close in a meaningful game hurts far much more than being blown out.
Thanks. Thanks for bringing up 2001 again. Now I’ll be annoyed for a little bit. Haha

Honestly I think right now it's about incremental improvement and building a solid foundation for the future. We're just not going to close the gap right away. Pruitt's oline recruiting looks fairly awesome though; he is addressing our biggest concern right away or at least attempting to.

Every good coach wins by year three and it's not a silly narrative. It's a simple fact. If they aren't improving the program rapidly by then, they unlikely to ever get it going and are almost assuredly never going to contend for titles. Also despite the protestations that have cropped up lately, the program was left better by Butch than by Dooley. If Butch, being generally incompetent can get the team to 9 wins in year three after taking over the disaster he did. Pruitt should easily be in the 9-10 win range by year three if he's remotely competent,

Its absolutely a stupid narrative. Wanna know why? Because no situations are exactly the same. The program was left in worse shape than what Dooley left. Dooley left Butch an NFL OL. Yes he had the disasterous 2012 OL debacle. But please tell me, did Dooley go 4-8? Did he go almost 2 years with ZERO strength and conditioning? No. You people who who cannot see how badly Butch sabotaged this program should have MRIs and psychiatric evaluations immediately.

We aren't even closing the gap on UK, Vandy, Missouri and SC. We can't even be mentioned in the same sentence as UF or UGA. As bad as the Vandy losses sting, Missouri beats us, and laughs at us. They make it look laughably easy.

Desperation. It really is that bad. I don’t see any gaps closing.

After the 85 team...

I'll take the teams from 89 and up.
If only Fulmer was not so hard headed about Randy Sanders?????????
Randy got too much credit for the NC game. He wasn't ready to be a Big-time OC, at a big-time program. I truly believe that Cutcliffe calling the plays we beat FSU by 20, easily.

Many proclaimed Pruitt a "great coach" prior to him ever coaching a game. Tennessee football is so irrelevent that coach worship is really the only hope we have for brighter days ahead.
Nothing indicates that the UT admin is committed to building a winning program. So we can only hope to get lucky and find that diamond in the rough coach that pulls us out, or have prefect timing for a coach like we did with Rick Barnes.
Rick Barnes was a gift from the Basketball God. Amen!

I have this unfathomable dream of an All-UT Alum Coaching Staff. Is it possible?
