We've Been Down This Road Before.

If timing was the problem in getting a qualified head coach from the college ranks (which I do believe was part of it.) Then why not turn to the NFL and get a hot coordinator from there?

Remember how Bama's AD kept pushing Saban to come, and kept pushing and pushing, even though he said no plenty of times? Well, this is probably what Hammy did...

Hamilton: Hey, Jon, It's Mike Hamilton, AD from UT...Would you consider the UT job at all?

Gruden: Um, no thanks Mike. I'm happy where I'm at.

Hammy: Thanks, Jon. Talk to you later.

And end scene.

Hamilton should have called Gruden 100 times and if he didn't, I'm really disappointed.
I don't know much about what is going on in Gruden's mind, but I think 5 million may have gotten him here. It would be completely worth it.

To be fair, all the names we were hearing sounded absolutely terrible. I don't want Muschamp hear at all, but he seemed like the top name we were going after. It's sickening. I'd rather hold out longer and take a chance with Bob Stoops, even if he says no. Throw in more money if it would change his mind. I'm also surprised Gruden would be so unreceptive, seeing as he isn't coaching. Is there no amount of money he would have accepted?

Hamilton probably wouldn't trust Stoops or Gruden to pick their own staff. Dooley had to earn that respect.

Gruden for 5 mil>Dooley at 2.4mil

I think if Hammy had pushed harder, he would have come. Might have taken a week, but would have been worth it.

Gruden has an ego, you don't think becoming the "Savior of Tennessee Football" would have appealed to him?

I LOVE Thompson and Cheney, but if they don't stay because we get Stoops or Gruden, then I'm all for it. I trust Gruden/Stoops to have a good staff.

Kippy left because we turned him down...not vice versa

That was Kippy decision and choice. Clearly he is well liked and respected everywhere.

The facts still remain as follows:

Hired as Assistant at UT 2 or 3 weeks ago at a salary of $300,000 +

Was to be considered a candidate for the head coach at UT.

Was deemed not as good a candidate as Dooley.

Dooley wanted to keep him on staff at the same or greater position than the one that he agreed to 2 or 3 weeks ago.

He did not want to stay around and fight the good fight.
No harm, no foul. I wish he and his family well. He will always be a Vol. I still think Kippy is the same class of candidate as Cutcliff. Great guy and coach - just not the presence and personality needed to lead the Orange Nation. Will Dooley? Only time will tell.

If he selects the right staff he may prove another " Bruce Pearl " type hire and story. Sorry Hat - I knew that one would make you head spin around a little.

That's what I was saying...

If Hamilton wanted to hit a Home Run, then get a young, hot-shot position coach from the NFL like a Mike Tomlin, Josh McDaniels, Raheem Morris kinda coach. Why he didn't do that made no sense.

I would bet he left because he was hurt and pissed they went with DD.

His interview was a sham, so we don't really know if we are getting the best candidate or not. Then he left likely because that interview was a sham. Probably didn't have much to do with "fighting the good fight" or his appreciation for Tennessee...

Funny how the contract was being worked out as the Kippy interview was still going on then.

That's not funny, nor was it professional or fair to Kippy. That being said Dooley was the better candidate of the two and they had already reached that conclusion. They should have handled the timing and release of everything to treat Kippy with the professionalism he deserved.

Kippy in my opinion shouldn't have gotten po'd, should have stayed helping build the best staff in America and shouldn't have headed for the Left Coast. He needs to be here, his family needs to be here, etc. What changed his mind in 3 weeks??

Stoops has a pretty respectable coaching tree...or did until players started whining about "mistreatment"

See something consistent in the Kiffin and Dooley hires? Both were in charge of recruiting for a major college, USC in one case and LSU in the other. Obviously this was part of Hamilton's agenda, as it should have been. I don't think we need a technician type of guy, like a position coach from the NFL, as badly as we do someone who can recruit the South, and the rest of the nation, for talent.

Recruiter first as head coach; hire great staff for the technical part. That was the Kiffin strategy, and this also I think.

No doubt those are some of the reasons he left. Just as Hamilton needed to interview all the candidates Kippy should have met DD and interviewed with him before making his decision.

If I had been in Kippy's shoes I too would have been po'd but Seattle versus Knox-vegas aka Heaven?

Someone track down what his position and salary are in Seattle. It rains every day and the cost of living is higher.
