tl;dr
I was driving a 73 Pontiac Catalina and a 76 Toyota pickup around some of the neighborhood roads when I was too young to do so. The Catalina was an automatic, and the Toyota was a 4-speed.
My first car was an 85 1/2 Ford Escort, base model (all I could afford) five speed, no power steering, no air conditioning. AM radio I upgraded to a Kenwood. The car was black with maroon interior. I put over 175,000 miles on that car. I loved that machine for a lot of reasons. Nobody told me I needed power steering, an auto transmission, or AC, and I didn't know the difference.
I snagged a 1979 Grand Prix about the time I got rid of the Escort and put about 150,000 miles on it. The Grand Prix I sold to a friend of the family, and I still see it on the roads.
Now, I could kick myself in the a$$ for getting rid of both those cars, if for no other reason than you actually rolled up the dam windows and there wasn't a switch to break (the Grand Prix switch never broke or shorted out).
I had an 87 Grand Marquis I miss a lot.
 
My wife drove a base model Saturn (manual transmission, no power anything, but it had AC) until I bought her a Honda Civic (she picked it out) on her 50th birthday. She’s still driving that car (scheduled maintenance, nothing has every broken on that car). She won’t be deterred. Another 150,000 miles is her reckoning.
