I'm thinking:
Weinke: QBs, OC,
Scott: TEs assist OC,
Welker: WRs & Special Teams
Hand: OL & TE's
Gillespie: RBs
or:
Weinke: QBs, OC,
Scott: Special Teams, Recruiting Coord, Assist HC
Welker: WRs & TEs
Hand: OL, assist OC
Gillespie: RBs
That would be a solid core of Offensive coaches if we shell out the dough.
I think some WAY over simplify how hard a coach's job is. It isn't about having a magnetic personality or being a good player. There is everything from player evaluation to nutrition to film analysis to game prep to grades to strength training to off season planning, etc. you just don't walk in the building knowing how to do those things.
What you say has a lot of truth but there is another way to look at it. This is just my opinion and purely that.. but. I notice most guys that were greats end up failing at a pretty high rate as teachers of said profession because they have very narrow views on what success is. They know what they had to do to succeed and they can teach that but that won't always work for the guys they teach.Who's the better physics teacher? A person who was trained to be a teacher and has a limited understanding of physics? Or a world renowned physicist who is taking his first teaching gig. Not a given that the world renowned physicist will get better results, but the limiting factor is teaching skills, not knowledge of physics. Therefore, the potential advantage is significantly higher for the physicist.
Z knows how to teach, but is limited by his knowledge of the position. Welker knows how to be dominant at the position at the highest level and make millions of dollars. Much higher ceiling.
I think this continues to lead toward Scott being promoted to OC, then ZA leaving for being passed over, or being asked to leave.
I think if this happens I'll be ok with it...
OC - Scott (TE)
QB - Weinke
WR - Welker
OL - Mahoney replaced
