Wes Welker UT Staff?

Wouldn't be a bad hire, imagine kids coming in here and seeing Manning and Welker playing a little catch at the practice facility....it would only help

Why not hire him? Could receivers be much worse off? Surely he can teach technique, route running and ball security. I have to believe he could recruit well. All high school football players should know who he is and how good a career he had. Super bowl rings will get their attention.

A few years running routes for Manning doesn't hurt either. Peyton was psycho about practicing perfection and, if even a little bit of that rubbed off on Welker, I think UT will be just fine.

There are worse people to hire than a Super Bowl champion who was undrafted and played over 10 years in the league. I would think he'd be able to teach young men how to play the position.

Most on here would love to see Manning return as QB coach. Except for the former Vol aspect, how is Welker at Receiver Coach any different?

No difference at all.. Careful though, you're employing logic which is akin to discussing quantum mechanics to many on here...

Has Wes Welker ever coached?

According to the article, yes. But only for a year as a "guest coach".

Wes Welker, a five-time Pro Bowler who led the NFL in receptions on three separate occasions during his career but hasn’t played since 2015, has helped the Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins as a “guest coach” in the past year and has expressed interest in getting into the coaching business.

Very good hire for GA or quality control but an awful just awful hire if CZA leaves.

You don't know if it's a awful hire or not. Heck I would take Welker over Azzani right now. No he hasn't been a coach but he knows what it takes to play receiver and players would gravitate toward him and he would probably be a good recruiter than could communicate well with young players. Football isn't rocket science and he knows how to run routes and knows how to get space. He may go into QC at first but he would help our receiver greatly I would think. Manning has always said he was a very smart receiver and was very good at ciphering defense alignments. I don't see how it could be any worse than the average at best recievers coach we have now. GBO!!!!!

I think some WAY over simplify how hard a coach's job is. It isn't about having a magnetic personality or being a good player. There is everything from player evaluation to nutrition to film analysis to game prep to grades to strength training to off season planning, etc. you just don't walk in the building knowing how to do those things.

Well Azzanni isn't all that. IMHO. Welker may start out as a QC, but that doesn't mean he won't make a good coach either. Everybody has to start somewhere. GBO!!!!

you just answered your own analogy.... he was a dynamite WR in college and balanced all the things student athletes are faced with, competing against top notch Defenses, and has performed and been very successful at the highest level of the game in the NFL, playing for several teams and learning from their coaches and players... "grades and strength training"?? Someone else handles their school/study/grades and we just hired Rock.... He has played with and against the best of the best in WR's and DB's and knows what it takes to be successful... the only question would be if he can separate from being their buddy and their coach who will rip them a new one if needed....

I'm thinking:

Weinke: QBs, OC,
Scott: TEs assist OC,
Welker: WRs & Special Teams
Hand: OL & TE's
Gillespie: RBs

or:

Weinke: QBs, OC,
Scott: Special Teams, Recruiting Coord, Assist HC
Welker: WRs & TEs
Hand: OL, assist OC
Gillespie: RBs

That would be a solid core of Offensive coaches if we shell out the dough.

So your wanting to demote Gillespie? He's currently recruiting coordinator and asst. HC if I remember correctly. Someone help me out here if I'm wrong.

Gillespie is Asst Head Coach/Recruiting Coordinator and RB Coach if I'm not mistaken.
Really need to keep him on staff! One of the best coaches we have in my opinion
