Were any of you there for the 98 Arkansas game?

I remember in the 90s when we all wanted Fulmer fired when he lost 1-2 games a year and couldn’t figure out how to beat Florida. That gives you the mindset in the 90s vs today. Our expectations are lower to say the least.
Same expectations today as there was then.

I’m 28 so I was 5 when this game happened, I remember watching it on tv, bits and pieces. Those of you who were there what was the vibe like in Neyland? I imagine people were leaving but turned around once the crowd roared bc of the fumble. For those of you who went im jealous!
I was there with my 13 year old son. Drove up from Mobile, AL. We went early. We attended the Vol walk. I spied Al Wilson and noted to whoever was listening: "Wow. Did you see Al Wilson?" The guy next to me said, "Yeah! He scared the Hell out of me!" A little later, a misty rain with light fog came down as we watched from the exit ramp on the West side of stadium as the Pride of the Southland Band played for the fans. It was a surreal experience. When we made our way to our seats in the northeast corner of the end zone, a young couple was setting in them. They offered to trade for their seats in the front row of the east upper deck on the 45. I reluctantly agreed to the exchange. Best seats I've ever had at any sporting event. I think the atmosphere was probably greater than a home team winning the Super Bowl in overtime, simply since there were probably over 80K people screaming their heads off. The euphoria lasted a long time. The memories my son and I have will last a lifetime!

My husband and I were there with a friend from work and his dad. Hubby and I had four season tickets in X3 Row 53, and always took different friends with us to the games. Our seats were in the dry, so we weren’t leaving no matter how bleak it looked. And when the fumble happened, the world just went insane. People were hugging and high-fiving strangers, people who’d headed to the concourse came running back in - it was just a special, special experience. Though my work friend and I long since moved far away from each other, he and I are Facebook friends, and he still thanks me for taking him and his dad to that game.

I was there, 7th grade. Feel bad for the folks that left when it was looking bleak. One of my favorite Tennessee Football memories.

I took my son who said, "Dad we can leave. It's over.' I said "it's not over until the last whistle blows" and we stayed. We talk about that great moment all the time!

I’ll never forget that night.

I broke my leg, tore my ACL, my MCL and had a couple meniscus tears.

But I didn’t go to the emergency room until after the game…….figured I could walk it off.

I couldn’t!!

I was 6 and at the game. Don't really remember anything. My dad told me my mom was so pissed when we didn't convert the 4th down that she wanted to leave. As we were waiting for her outside the women's bathroom, he said there was a massive roar and the stadium started to shake. So he scooped me up and we went running back in to see what had happened. Travis Henry did the rest. Years later he showed me some camcorder footage of parts of the game from our seats.

Who cares about the 98 Arkansas game? I was there for the 1999 National Championship Game.

Was there with my parents. Upper deck … I remember the rain and the stadium shaking after the fumble and Travis’ TD. Loudest games I have attended and can remember are Ok, Cal, 98 FL

Jealous of a lot of y'all. I was 17 but we didn't get to go to a lot of games. I spent that game driving around with friends listening to John Ward on the radio. Everything started coming to a crescendo as we were pulling into the old Bristol mall. My friends went on in. I stayed in the car and listened to the end of the game. It's a testament to Toyota quality that my little 89 Corolla's steering wheel was still intact by the final whistle.

I have a slightly different perspective from most as I didn’t grow up a UT fan. When I started school there my freshman year was 1997 (Peyton’s senior year of course). I was a huge college football fan so I knew a lot about UT but when Florida jumped on them 35-0 before I went to school there I didn’t care. But once I got there and went to the games I fell in love. The UGA game in 1997 was particularly fun. So 1998 rolls around and I’m all in. I went to all the games but I did have to leave Houston early due to an overindulgence. The Florida game was magical for sure and man did we have some fun that weekend but as a longtime college football fan I think the Arkansas game was more magical. It’s rare to see 2 undefeated teams playing each other in November and to have it right after we became #1 was awesome. So I was super jacked. The weather sucked. It was cold and raining the entire game and this was the first time I sat in the upper deck so we got soaked. The seats were actually great though as we were 5th row at about the 50. Then we come out and Arkansas smashed us right in the mouth putting us down 21-3. My best friend left at 14-3. My girlfriend (wife now) and I stayed. I told her that if we went down 28-3 we would probably leave as well but we made it 21-10 at the half so I thought we had a chance. When Tee threw it away on 4th down I was absolutely livid. What’s funny is I never considered leaving for one second. Instead I stripped off my rain jacket, threw it down and then did the same to my big UT coat underneath. So down to a tee shirt, freezing, and soaked I got even more fired up. Then it happened. I swear when it did I thought the upper deck was going to come down. It was definitely bouncing up and down. We all knew there was no way we would be denied after that and we certainly weren’t. I know most on here regard the Florida game that year as the best because it was Florida but, to me, Arkansas was the best. 2 top 10 undefeated teams in November, we come back from down 18, and win with the help of a play that was just as incredible and unlikely as any in the history of college football. I’ll never see a game like that again, at least not in person. A game like that might happen once a decade in all of football. Maybe. And hell yeah I was there! I still have my ticket and will never forget it.

Yep, I was there. It was Arkansas' game to lose, and sure enough, they did! Soaked and chilled to the bone, we headed for the exit with about 2 minutes left in the game, convinced the Vols had come up short. Was so upset I missed The Play!

I was there. It was a great comeback even before the fumble. After the fumble, I knew if they just kept giving the ball to Henry we were going to win.

Yes. I was a junior at UT. It was drizzly all day and Tennessee really didn’t play well. Tee Martin was pretty bad that day. I honestly don’t remember it being loud until after the stumble and fumble, at which point, the place went berserk and we just knew Tennessee was destined to score. They took the ball out of Tee’s hands and turned things over to that offensive line and Travis Henry. That line just blew Arkansas off the ball and the crowd fed off of it.

But honestly, the Florida atmosphere was much better that season. I don’t think of that Arkansas game as one of the great atmospheres at Neyland (which is a high bar) due to the fact that for most of the game, the team was flat and we were all a little disappointed. Many left before the fumble. Glad I didn’t. I saw a college football classic.

Good way to kill off a Saturday morning before a big game. Much better than watching Game Day.

I was there.North end zone upper deck. When people were leaving the girl I was with and I moved closer to the rail. When they fumbled it was about the loudest I ever heard Neyland.Almost threw the girl over the rail from lifting.Great game!

Was there and in the section of the stadium where we were looking directly at the fumble. Out part of the stadium erupted and then everyone else realized what had happened. As others said so loud it was inside your head. Good times.
