First, i haven't read a single thread or article about Sat. nights game, and the only reason why is, if you can't come away from that game thinking two things, then i'm not sure i want to hear your opinion:
1. We really aren't that good.
2. A win is a win is a win, and i'm not giving it back because of no.1 above.
with that said, here's my take on this weekend's tom foolery that is called college football:
TN/SC....hm. i don't think we did anything particularly well. we had some good plays running and throwing the 1st half, had a couple of turnovers that turned in to points. and we were up 21 at the half.
I should have known when they came back to start the 3rd qtr and CPF was quoted as saying, about having a let down: "Oh, there won't be a let down.", that we were in trouble. and we were. for the second straight week we made a very pedestrian offense look like the Indianapolis Colts. 300+ yards rushing in the 2nd half. 21 unanswered points and an offense that, imo, played the entire second half like we were down 2 scores than ahead 3 td's. befuddling doesn't even describe how i felt.
the course of events thought that ensued to get the game to OT were perhaps the strangest set of events i've ever seen in a football game. First, AF's fumble, bounces 7 yards up field from the end of the run, and some how a reserve offensive linemen is 20 yards down field to recover the ball? then, it's 3rd down only 9 seconds to go and we have to go for the fg then, instead of calling a time out (i'll get to that in a second) cause we didn't have anymore. Lincoln on the field, and shanks the FG. and we're saved by a penalty, move it back 5 yards and on the do over, he drills it. i'm sure, just like they drew it up on the sidelines.
the timeout thing......let me just say i seriously questioned the use of an "icing" timeout with 1:24 left on the clock and you're going to get it back with time left to possibly go down and win the game late. Turns out, had we had that time out, we probably could have used it. anyway, it didn't wind up hurting us in this game, but i was literally stunned by that move.
Ryan Succup. it's not your fault. SC fans should really take it easy on him and just understand, the stars were in line, the moon was at the perfect angle......whatever it was...we were just supposed to win this game.
i don't know if it's possible to win and be as pissed off as i was. I think it was only due to the fact that i was still in disbelief that we won the game. i'll take it. i just don't necessarily "feel" all that good about it. and was it just me or did CPF look like he won the Super Bowl on the sidelines? maybe there was something to all that "hot seat" stuff after all?
anyway, SC did everything but win the game. sucks for you, good for us. sometimes that's just the way it goes.
We're in FIRST PLACE!!!!!! take that SEC E!!!
elsewhere:
FL/GA. this is the WOW game of the weekend. Personally, i loved the celebration in the end zone. it didn't really help, as FL answered with the good field position the ensuing kickoff provided, but nonetheless, i like the enthusiasm.
was very impressed with GA all around. they out physicalled FL, in much the same way LSU and AUB did. got a big play or two and Knowshan Moreno was stellar.
i can say with a great deal of confidence, i'm glad that's not the GA team that showed up on Oct. 6th. I can also say with a great deal of confidence that us playing FL 1st in the SEC is as big a disadvantage for us as there is in the SEC.
so, GA.....thanks, signed Big Orange Nation.
MSU/KY.....ha ha. it was a bulldog kind of weekend. that's two big wins for Croom, and a sure job saver. as for KY....just didn't look prepared.
Aub/Ole miss.......yawn.
Kansas/A&M......that was an impressive win for the jayhawks. all they got left is, now a look ahead game against Neb, Mizzou and Ok. St. they have a shot. beat OK in the title game...........rock chock, jay hawk.........KU.
USC/ORE.....ding dong, the which is dead. injuries have killed USC this year. Ore doesn't care. Ore is good.......but so is.......
ASU/Cal....cal, cal, cal.....oops, apparently there are other games on the schedule besides USC and TN. didn't you get the memo? the game that was the game of the year in CAl/USC now takes a back seat to ASU/ORE. Dennis ERickson is coach of the year.
PSU/OSU.......PSU just isn't that good. OSU gets credit for winning at night in the state of PA against that crowd, but PSU just isn't a team that i'm interested in using as a benchmark for how good OSU is. the Big 10 is yet again the Big 2. the rest of that league sucks.
and in the ACC.........wait, did they even have any games this weekend?
so after watching 7-8 weeks of games, here is my top 5 based on what i've seen:
1. ASU
2. LSU
3. BC
4. Ore
5. OSU
another great weekend folks...and please keep in mind...we DID win.....it took me about a day to figure that out too....but it's still a W.
