Not a detailed report yet.

No practice for Jones. Bad practice from Stephens.

Any updates?
• The Vols first-team OL, sans always-thin C Josh McNeil, has lost a combined weight that would exceed the GDP of several small nations.
• As expected, Lane will wait until tonight to meet media. We'll see which players return to action for the 6:45 nightcap.
• Vols Jr QB Nick Stephens had a tough morning, but, like usual, he owned up to it. Judging by today and Mon., he's just not morning person.
• NOT a big deal for GJones. Tough kid. Would take a lot to keep him off field on game week.
• Fr Greg King looked ok at first team SLB, filling in for depleted corps. Thompson and Lathers could dress tonight, per LKiffin.
• Top WR Gerald Jones didn't go this morning but said the unspecified injury wash a big deal. He got dinged last night (not the wrist, either)
• Vols Fr CB Eric Gordon returned to practice this morning after missing yesterday with NCAA Clearinghouse issues. about 1 hour ago

I was there for the last hour of practice. I didn't pay close attention though, because my 2 year old daughter came with me, and her favorite part of the practice was running up and down the bleachers, so I had a few distractions.

Warren looked great. He's actually looked great at every practice I've been to. Right now in practice, he's looking like a 50 catch 800 yard type player for this season (if the QB play is decent, of course). It seemed like every play was going to him, and he'd make the catch no matter where the ball was thrown. He caught a long pass from Crompton, a "jump-ball" type play, and he caught quite a few short passes over the middle that he turned into 15 yard gains.

Gerald Jones didn't practice. At one point, Askew lit up Nukeese, and Jones was taunting Nukeese saying, "Hey, Nuke! Can I ASK YOU something? Did that hurt?" (making a pun....ask you = Askew)

I wonder if that was due to the absence of Jones? I bet Jones will get the majority of passes this year with Warren not far behind him.

The two other practices I went to, Jones was on the field and Warren was still making great plays.

Krab, how would you compare Crompton and Stephens at this point based on what you saw?

I'm not there but from everything I've read, it looks as if Crompton is slowly emerging as the top guy. Now I know there's a lot of practice yet to go but early indications seem to point to Crompton as being the starter for the WKU game.

Sorry, like I said, I wasn't able to pay close attention. All I can tell you is Stephens didn't look too hot today. I saw him fumble a shotgun snap, and he threw a long pass that was extremely wabbally and intercepted. Crompton seemed okay. The defense looked really intense while I was there.

It was funny. At one point, it was 3rd and 9 on the 11 yard line. Hancock made a catch from Crompton and he dove into the endzone, Lane and Reaves were yelling "TOUCHDOWN! TOUCHDOWN!" While Coach O and Monte were yelling, "NO, HIS KNEE WAS DOWN AT THE 3! THAT'S 4TH DOWN! 4TH DOWN!"

I enjoyed watching the coaches competing as much as the players.

Thanks Krab. Sounds like it was a fun morning.

Oh yeah, also...don't know if this has been said on here.

Eric Gordon was cleared to play. He was practicing today.

I have no idea why the clearing house didn't let him practice yesterday, though.

For those that have attended practice in past years, were the offensive and defensive coaches not as competitive during practice compared to the current staff?

I was fortunate enough to be able to watch practice this morning. I got there about 9am and they had already started. The offense was on the 100 yard field and the defense was on the smaller field.

They were running drills in groups. I watched to QB/RB group first. Was mainly watching the QBs, Bryce Brown, and Oku. Oku was much smaller than I thought he would be. They were practicing screen passes. Everything looked good at that point to me.

I made my way over to where the defense was practicing. As soon as I got there the horn blew and some of the offense came to join the defense on the smaller field. They were running drills with everything but WRs. Just running plays. The first time Oku got the ball he broke one, that was nice to see.

Listening and watching Coach O with in these drill was the best part of the morning. The man is a beast and he is crazy intense. I wouldn't want him in my grill. Quote of the day, Coach O told the defense during these drills "Chase their ass down, chase their ass down!" During this segment, Crompton missed 2 snaps in a row.

From here they did some scrimmage type work, pretty fun to watch and very intense. IMO, neither QB looked great. The D would stuff the O a few plays in a row, then the O would break a big one. Brandon Warren had a couple of nice sideline catches. I did hear one the coaches late in practice telling him to pick it up and quit limping.

Nu'Keese took some snaps at QB. Most of the time he handed it off, he did have nice pass to a TE.

Pretty nice morning of watching them. I was just amazed by how small Nu'Keese and Oku were. Bryce Brown has good size to him. Also seeing Crompton and Stephens up close, those guys are both big dudes.

I also got to meet a couple of media members. I met Wes Rucker, Brent Hubbs, and a guy reporting for Basillio. Rucker and the guy from Basillio were really nice guys and we talked a little football. I think I was just a bother to Hubbs. :)

Nu'Keese also appeared to have a hamstring problem late in the practice.
