We should have listened to Dooley

Dooley got hired AND RETAINED by an NFL team as a coach. He's now been hired by Mizzou as an OC though I think most of us are pretty dumbfounded by that.

Dooley took over a train wreck. Fulmer's decline had left the roster in awful shape. They had practically no DL's worth anything and had to rebuild the OL Then Kiffin left the program with even more problems.

Purely as a football coach.... IMO Dooley is considerable better than Jones. Obviously by his own unintentional confession, he wasn't the leader to get everyone around the football program headed in the right direction. But he gets beaten up more than he deserves.

It is possible that UT had to go through what we've been through to get Fulmer as the AD and some of the problems in the AD purged out?
By no means is this a defense of Jones, but I don't see how you can say this. Jones recruited significantly better than Dooley did. Jones did win some games of actual consequence while at UT (South Carolina '13, Georgia '15 and '16, Florida '16). Dooley never won anything of consequence at UT. Jones won 3 bowl games. Dooley only even made 1 bowl game. Dooley inherited a mess... So did Jones.

Derek Dumbass pissed off most of the high school football coaches in the state of Tennessee and it took a lot of work for them to think favorably about Tennessee again.

The biggest mistake Dave Hart made was not firing him and paying his buyout after the 2011 Kentucky game when he was begging to be fired.

My understanding was he wanted to fire him that night when they got back to Knoxville and got talked out of it. Not sure if it was the powers that be that said no or what.

True ... and for all the valid criticism of Jones for choking away the Oklahoma and Florida games in 2015 and then Florida again last year... have you ever seen a team look as confused as we did at the end of the LSU game in 2010? That was awful coaching.

Granted, arguing over Dooley and Jones is like arguing over what's worse, changing a diaper or cleaning up vomit but still, one is definitely worse than the other.

Derek Dumbass was and is out of his element as a head coach. Botch Jones is a MAC,American Athletic Conference or Sunbelt Conference level head coach and was out of his element coaching in the SEC.

Listen, if things were right on The Hill at that time, Dooley would have NEVER been hired. In fact, if the leadership was right, Fulmer would have gotten the support and correction he needed, and would have never been fired. The UTAD fell apart when Dickey left.

Dooley got filthy rich over the debacle.

I agree... and to that end, I do see Jones getting a job in one of those conferences again and probably doing okay. Dooley on the other hand, will be lucky if he can just keep a job as a coordinator. I don't see this OC job at Missouri working out for either party. We'll see.

I could see DD getting a head coaching job at an FCS School or being an assistant coach in the CFL;)

Derek Dumbass was projectile diarrhea while Botch Jones was like a bad case of acid reflux;)

What went wrong:

He was a lazy and sucky recruiter.

He didn't have enough quality coaches though he did have Wilcox for a while, Chaney, Pittman and Gillespie.

He didn't recruit speed and he didn't inherit a lot either.

He didn't motivate the team and adequately address the discipline problems. If he did, we would have never lost to Kentucky or that god awful blown lead verses Mizzou.
