In context it sounds ok, but even so, it still has a little bit of excuse feel to it -- enough that it's better left unsaid. Better to just say the typical coachspeak about it being a "challenging opponent, especially on their home turf... It'll be especially important for all our players to stay focused on doing their jobs, minimizing mistakes, playing with intesity..." etc.
If it was when he said it at the press conference, I checked it out, not as bad as it sounds here.
Paraphrasing but basically said we had to get off to a fast start because it takes a mature football team to play in the swamp and we had a low number players familiar with doing so. Basically in response to a question if we needed to get off to a fast start and he said yes and and that was his explanation as to why.
Personally would have preferred he didn't bother mentioning it but no reason for OP's dogs armpits to be chapped, I'm certain I got that wrong but hopefully close.
I think you have to be able to start fast, particularly when you go on the road, Jones said. Its going to be a great college football environment. Of our 70 individuals boarding the plane going to Gainesville, only 27 have ever even been in the swamp. Thats going to be a great challenge in and of itself. You have to rely on your older players, but it comes down to the discipline to execute for 60 minutes. If it takes more than 60 minutes, it takes more than 60 minutes. I think it takes a mature football team, particularly when you go on the road in this great rivalry.
Hence the hyperventilating when he says anything goofy. They are like a bunch of scorned ex-wives LOL.
Dooley took a lot of these crybabies pride and went off into the wild blue yonder with it.
Oh well. More for the rest of us.
I listened to the press conference live at the time and I didn't pick up on it at all. It's sort of funny I guess but maybe people hear what they want to hear. I was listening to hear about the things he thought they needed to work on and of course you sort of have to interpret the coachspeak language. At the time I actually thought he did a good job.
Here is the quote in question:
Did anyone else just hear his embrassing interview on the Finebaum show?
He's already making excuses for why we'll lose the Florida game. He mentioned that only 27 players have played before in the Swamp. Mentioned the 3 games in 13 days. Mentioned the fact we have all these new starters. Just excuse after excuse.
So embrassing that even Finebaum had to call him out.
Everybody's got deal with it in their own way, but that don't mean they should put their insecurities all over the web.
Good grief! Some of you get your underwear in a wad very easy.

102455, you know I'm generally a pretty strong Butch supporter.
But he really...really...does need to stop with this "X percent of our team has never Y" stuff. If it's not advance excuse-making, it sure sounds like it. It sounds like insecurity. It sounds like teenage angst.
It sounds like a lot of possibilities, but none of them are good.
He really just needs to take it out of his public speaking play book.
Did he say anything that was not true?
