We need a mobile QB!

Huh? Clausen had better WR's than anyone to play under CPF at UT except MAYBE Manning. He had the best TE by far and some good receivers out of the backfield.

I assume you're referring to Stallworth, Washington, Witten, and Parker. You're right, that was a great group...but, only for 2001.

In 2002, all of those guys were gone (except for Washington who was injured). Tony Brown, Leonard Scott, and Montrell Jones do not stack up as any of the "better WR's" that any UT qb has ever thrown to.

He had Witten in 2001 and 2002 to throw to. But in 2003 he really didnt have any great wideouts. Im mean he had James Banks and he spent all of his time in jail. Now I agree in 2001 he had probably the most talented offensive team in Tennessee history. Yeah I said history, they didnt win the NT but they should have. They had Travis Stephens, Chad Clifton, Jason Witten, Dante Stallworth, and Kelly Washington. If it was not for coaching that team would have won the NT.

Crompton ran a 4.8 40 in High School. Stevens is slower then that. Unless BJ Coleman gets the start, UT will have less speed at QB then last year with Ainge.

I can't find a 40 time for Coleman. Both of the other guys are considered more mobile than Ainge. Crompton seems inclined to take off with it once in awhile and didn't look bad against LSU... I wonder why he and the coaches think he's more mobile than everyone here definitively says he is?

Witten wasn't drafted til 2003.

FTR, what blue chip WR having watched Clausen play would have wanted to sign with the Vols? Amazing they did as well as they did recruiting in 2001-2003.

Yeah, I can't imagine a receiver seeing the numbers Stallworth and Washington had in 2001 wanting to play with Clausen.

Witten's last season was 2002. He was remarkably underutilized considering our lack of depth at WR. The offensive line in 2002 was also the worst I've ever seen from a Tennessee team. The defenses in 2002 and 2003 were also very mediocre. Like him or not, Clausen was nowhere near the biggest problem UT had during his four years.

Miami would have beaten the 2001 team into a coma.

I have to disagree with you hat. I think Tennessee could have beaten Miami in 2001. Miami was not that great in 2001, they won a lot of game like we did in 98. It wasnt like they blew everyone out that year, and played a very overrated Nebraska team that didnt even win their conference that year. Tennessee was a lot better than Nebraska and I think Tennessee would have won.

The 2002 O-line was horrible. Banks was sacked 5 times against Georgia that year.

Now you're channeling ThisIsWhyImHot. There's a reason the 2001 Miami team is universally regarded as one of the 5 best in college history. They were that damn good.

They are widely regarded as one of the best, if not the best, college football teams of all time. I tend to agree. Their running back stable alone would be enough to keep most college teams competitive.

Miami played exactly two close games in 2001.

I don't think that Tennessee would have won, but I think it would have been a very good game.

I thought Tennessee had the best defensive line that Miami would have faced all season in 2001. And one of the biggest keys to the U's success that year was that they kept Dorsey's jersey spotless all year...I think Tennessee would have found a way to get some pressure on Dorsey, and make that game interesting.

On the flip side, the U most definitely had the best back 7 that UT would have played against all season...Stallworth, Parker, Washington, and Witten were studs, but Miami could have neutralized all those weapons.

UT's 98 team was loaded. I don't think you'll find many around try to tell you that team wasn't good. I can't think of an SEC team since then that's been as good.

If we couldn't contain David Greene, we weren't going to stand much chance against Dorsey and his boys.

With QB Dorsey, RB Portis, FS Reed, WR Andre Reed, Tight end Shockey, and Offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie, Miami dominated the 2001 season from start to finish. Hands down. They scored 512 points, I would have to say they had a hell of a team.

LSU's 2001 skill position players<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Miami's 2001 skill position players.

The only reason Miami was in that game was because of a miracle play by Reed in which he took an interception against BC in the final minutes. They were beat and BC was not very good that year. Tennessee was every bit as talented as Miami. Hell we had 4 or 5 pro bowlers on our team that year.

Miami was ahead when Ed Reed made that interception. I love when revisionist historians just make stuff up. The 2001 Tennessee team you're trying to prop up lost at home to a mediocre Georgia team. Here's a little lesson: Winning a close road game>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Losing at home to an average team.

I'd take a closer look at those rosters if I were you. Tennessee was good - and I'd be delighted if Tennessee were that good today - but they were not as talented as Miami.

It's not even close. Sean Taylor was on Miami's bench in 2001. That's the kind of personnel they had.
