We need a mobile QB!

Are you sure?

Hm, maybe I did say that. :p I didn't just leave it at that though, that's why next, I specifically named two teams. :)

Look, regardless of phrases used like "down the stretch" or not, I'm not giving in that Tennessee would have definitely lost to Miami that year. That's it, that's my point. We beat highly ranked Florida and Michigan and I don't believe it's out of the realm of possibility that we could have beaten Miami. I will give you that Miami team was amazing and had great talent, but everyone is capable of having a bad day.

Your comment is in response to my comment. But, in my post, I made it a point to say "not always."

Gotcha. I see that now.

Generally, but not always....is that like sometimes, most of the time, almost always, or what? :p

Miami annihilated Florida in the Sugar Bowl after the 2000 season and in the 2002 opener. I don't think beating the Gators is any indicia a team could have even played with that 'Canes squad.

I'm not sure that using teams from different seasons is very relevant. Wasn't Ron Zook coaching that 02 team?

Spurrier was coaching the 2000 team, which included the vast majority of the guys from the 2001 team. The Gators weren't even competitive against the 'Canes.

I still don't believe you can compare teams from different seasons regardless of how many of the same guys you return.

You can't . . . For instance, the 2003 Hurricanes returning a majority of their team that got jobbed out of a perfect season and a national title in 2002 lost to us in Miami.

I'd say losing Willis McGahee, Andre Johnson, Ken Dorsey, and Jerome McGougle had something to do with that. As did Frank Gore being injured.

On the mobile QB subject, everybody likes a QB that on 3rd and long, can run for 10 yds when everyone is covered. Especially when playcalling is uninspired. It keeps the defense honest.

Who do you think you are getting back on topic?

I do agree though.

Just ask Florida and Michigan.
Two fantastic days... The Florida day was probably a little more exciting for me. I miss the days when UT was better than Ohio State at football.

But on a side note, I don't think UT would have been close by the end of the Miami game.

I have to disagree with you hat. I think Tennessee could have beaten Miami in 2001. Miami was not that great in 2001, they won a lot of game like we did in 98. It wasnt like they blew everyone out that year, and played a very overrated Nebraska team that didnt even win their conference that year. Tennessee was a lot better than Nebraska and I think Tennessee would have won.

It sounds like you are confusing the 2001 Canes with the 2002 Buckeyes.

Nebraska was good. They beat a really good Oklahoma team, and were dominant until Colorado. I'm not sure what happened, because although the Buffaloes were really good, that was a disgraceful performance. It isn't like Nebraska was middle of the road or anything like that.

Yeah, Clausen's inability to lead is why his combined career record at Florida, Alabama, and Miami was 5-0.
Well hat bama sucked in those years. Florida wasn't setting the world on fire and we only played miami once at their place. The rest of casey clausen's tenure at UT isn't worth discussing. But you did bring up the best things he did while he was here. I guess i left out that michigan butt whooping but thats about it. Clausen wasn't vocal, didn't get in guys faces. I say we need that kind of guy to get back to where we want to be.

Now I know you've never spoken to any of his teammates about him. Or maybe you should try asking one of the Peach Bowl officials from the Clemson game.
No i haven't it was known he wasn't like that. Can't remember to many times he ever spoke out except before every georgia butt whoppin.

They would have been closer than anyone else that year.

After guys everyone loves like Donte Stallworth had a major letdown in the SEC Championship, Casey told the team that the goal is to defeat Michigan. Anyone not focused on that goal can stay in Knoxville. You already know about the thrashing that followed.

What I don't get is that some of you would rather have a track star than a quarterback. I'll take a competent pocket passer any day. I can't really think of any occasions where Ainge would have won us a game on his feet, or for that matter lost any because he didn't run.

You can have both. (mobility) and (all the rest of the tools that make a great quarterback) aren't mutually exclusive. The world of quarterbacks is not divided into Drew Bledsoe on the one hand and Michael Vick on the other. And this thread need not be polarized as such. Think John Elway, Brett Favre, Steve Young, Tony Romo, even Donovan McNabb. Effectiveness as a pocket passer is enhanced by mobility. If you have quick feet you can avoid would-be tacklers, and there is scientific evidence that you can throw a lot better when you aren't getting tackled.

I want a mobile quarterback, but not so we can run the option. I would like a quarterback to be elusive enough in the pocket to make blitzers miss and just fast enough to be able to tuck it and run it on a 3rd and 4 and move the sticks. This is something neither Ainge nor Clausen could do.

I'm trying to think of any team of the last 20 years that could even come close to competing with 2001 Miami, and the only one I can come up with is 1995 Nebraska....and that's pretty much it.

I agree you can have both, but a lot of folks on here want someone to run first, pass second.
