I'm watching "The U" on ESPN+. It talked about how the 1983 recruiting class was the group that turned it all around for Miami. After multiple multiple head coaches and athletic directors, the program was at rock bottom. They even considered shutting it down. Then they got Schnellenberger, and he went and recruited a class of guys from Miami. And those guys who had played with each other for years and years decided to play for their home school and then completely changed the narrative of that program.

I am hoping that Heupel can convince the class of 2022 to be that for us. We have more talent in the state of Tennessee than ever. And this class can be the key for us to change the narrative and get this program on the right direction. We NEED Ty Simpson, Walter Nolen to start the momentum of this class.

I fully believe we haven't seen the last of Tennessee football. We just need our "Class of '83"

I'm reading this in a "U" t-shirt I found on clearance for $3.

Hope it turns out better than the Hurd/legacy class.

Except that our coaches just got fired for how they got their players...
"At Miami, the NCAA investigation began shortly after Mallios and Schnellenberger took over the program in 1979"... Washington Post 1981

Other than Simpson, who is ranked about 45, does Tennessee have anyone ranked in the top 100? Maybe I just missed them. Or maybe we have a bunch of hidden gems.

There's not some uncovered gold mine of talent like there was in Miami.
Perhaps not, but we can put together a really solid core of a class year in and year out from in state recruiting. Win the state of Tennessee and work your way out from that yearly base. It's not going to close the gap with UGA, Bama and UF most years, but it will at least give us a firm foundation and solid base to start with. It also might start to finally establish the Tennessee culture that seems lost right now. Yeah, I know a lot of families are moving in from other areas so they don't have that love of UT, but families want to see their kids play. If they can do it in their own backyard with a solid SEC level program, it would seem easier to keep the kids home. Sure, we'll see some really elite talent decide to run to the hot program of the time, but we just need a foundation we can build on going forward. If I were Heupel, I'd make this upcoming class full of TN kids. We're gonna take our lumps so there's no avoiding the pain. Might as well start putting things right and in order right now.

The NCAA disagrees, unfortunately

I want good coaches and good players. Their ties to Tennessee is the most overrated quality they could possibly have. I couldn’t care less if any coach or recruit ever stepped foot of campus before committing to UT if they are talented and can help us

1983 was a strange year in CFB history. At the end of the year before the bowls you had:

Nebraska undefeated;
Texas undefeated;
Auburn with one loss; (to Texas)
Illinois with one loss: (to Missouri)
Miami with one loss; (to Florida) &

I always thought Auburn should have been national champions. Miami of course beat Nebraska because of a failed 2 point conversion and jumped all the way to No. 1 from No. 5 because Georgia beat Texas in the Cotton Bowl and UCLA pummeled Illinois in the Rose Bowl, and they leap frogged Auburn despite Auburn beating a 2 loss Michigan team in the Sugar Bowl. Auburn had beaten Florida, the only team to beat Miami and Georgia who beat the Texas team that was Auburn's only loss. Miami basically won the natty because their bowl game was more exciting. If that had been Tennessee I'd still be sore.

Pruitt showed up and basically said he didn’t recruit anyone from Tennessee. That’s the downside of a place like Alabama. You never have to beat the bushes looking for players. Pruitt insisted the players camp before extending an offer. As a result, other schools like LSU, Ohio St, and Clemson are now more connected in our own state.

CJH should establish/improve major connections right away within the state. One reason is for PWO during sanctions. If you are short scholarships, work with the borderline instate guys to walk on for a year. That’s much harder to do with out of state players.

The tradition of Tennessee (at least what’s left of it) is strongest in our own state. Leveraging that advantage must be part of our road back.

You know you have done something well when people all over the nation are clamoring to wear Miami merch. It was the swagger that developed at Miami...that is what we need. Even those who never set foot in the state of AL wear AL merch because their grandmas and granddads grew up there so they are now Bama fans. We need that swagger. How can we put TN back on the map? Is it fans or is it the program?

Coach Summit put the Lady Vols on the map for years. It was a proud program and well-respected.

Winning cures all. But I think its having a vision and something to believe in. Pruitt's vision never materialized. I think we will see an immediate difference with Heupel. The key will be getting everyone there in spring training and getting strength and conditioning.
