We just had a 6'5 punter commit

Might be the tallest punter of all time. It does worry me about potential blocks with that longer frame

He should be fine. Taking a third step would be a bigger concern for a punter time wise (looking at you Cunningham).

He's gonna have some big shoes to fill, Trevor Daniel is one of the best punters in school history.

Why not. We already have white Ray Lewis as out current punter. Nobody wants to get past our coverage for fear of getting split in half.

A punter with that length could have a hang time like few others.
a punter with that length would also be more prone to blocks, depending on his athleticism. and the fact he is a punter at 6'5" tells me not super athletic.. That being said I remember a punter for a Chargers back in the 90's, Darren Bennett who was a beast and also 6'5". Ferocious hitter, for a kicker.

So just because he is 6'5 you decided to deem he is not athletic?

Maybe he just wants to be a punter??

Not everything has to have a negative spin ya know??

I still would like someone to explain how his tweet got added to my OP

I added it. I add reference material occasionally to high traffic threads like commit threads or player threads. I didn't figure you'd mind. :dunno:

I left a note at the bottom, but I'm not sure whether or not that shows on mobile.

there is this thing called logic.. try it out sometimes. If you are 6'5" in high school every coach in all major sports is gonna give you a visit. if you end up a punter out of HS there is a reason. That reason will 90% of the time fall under 2 categories. 1 not really that athletic and 2 really dumb. Because if you are 6'5" (american) and athletic you have way better upside doing 50 other things.

Look up historically tall punters and they are either plodding beasts or australian. The aforementioned Punter for Sandiego only became an NFL punter because he got hurt so many times he could not longer play australian rules football. You'd best believe if a kid was super (or semi) athletic on a high school team his main position would not be any flavor of kicker. Its not a knock on the kid just an observation based on deductive logic. and maybe, just maybe, I understand how google works and did some research on the kid before posting. stranger things have happened.

this is how deductive logic works

realize this is highlight film. from it he is an obviously impressive/powerful kicker.
but look closer. its a highlight film aka his best plays. on quite a few of his punts if the guy rushing was an inch taller and .4 seconds faster block.
look at his recovery after a kick. gangly not a bad kicker just not likely to beat a juke.
I didn't see any highlights of him making tackles. either whoever made his tape does not know that's an important talent or... there were none. Kicker is the last stop before the returner takes it to the house.

none of what i say reflects on his rating or ability as a kicker it just shows I didn't just pull likely not very athletic out of my rear. The whole more chance of a punt being blocked is not even up for argument...the taller you are the longer it takes for a kick to happen (leg has to move further). More windup more follow through because more leg to move. The release point of the punt is also closer to the opposing team. There is a reason really tall kickers/punters are rare. If you see a really tall guy as a kicker in college he is usually the kickoff specialist. Not the punter and definitely not the kicker.

This kid goes to school 5min down the road from me. Also, fun fact of the day, that's the same school NFL RB Duce Staley came from.

That was quite the book. Regardless you can't determine the mans athletic ability just because he's a 6'5 punter.

Sorry. Lol. But you're wrong on this one.

ALSO @Pimo1

The ideal average height for an NFL kicker is in between 6'2 and 6'3... so 2 inches off is not much of a difference. Here is a chart if you would like to see the NFL and the height/weight of their punters and kickers..

Funny things is punters are usually taller.

I have no idea what his ranking is now, just know he was #1 when he committed to us and still #1 when Bama flipped him. If the rankings have changed that much, in this short a time, it's doubtful they mean anything to begin with IMO..

Yeah, football players get moved around spots all the time but when it happens to someone involved with us, just proves none of it means anything.
Guarantee you if we signed the number 50 punter, you would be on here offering it as proof of him sucking.

But signing the number 2 instead of the now number 3, somehow also a reason to be negative right?
No one buys your constant negative take anymore.

Can Kongbo play football? Seen no particular that he can as of yet.

He could turn out to be All American.

But based off his resume, he is a baller. The standard that has been set at UT is so high. It's easy to lose perspective.

It's easy to compare him to Vereen, Barnett, and White. He is a Vol. He could be top 5 in the country and not even make the top 10 all time Vols.

We expect great. That's the standard.

Special teams are HUGE!!!! If he's got a big leg that can change field position, that will be great for y'all.

GT has a true freshman that was one of the top punters in the country. I actually think he was the only kid to ever win two kohls kicking camp competitions two years in a row. Averaged 4.45 hang time and then average 44 yards one year and 51 yards another year. Hopefully he can help us against y'all this year.

I hear y'all have a really good punter?
