Thank god we landed a kicker! Most important dude on the team. Now to channel my inner Alan Iverson and complain about making a thread about a kicker.

UGA game was the turning point (not in a good way) for the season. Win that and we would have been watching our guys in the CFP.

Blew the Georgia kick. Missed the OU kick. Offense could have been in a better position to tie the game in the 4Q only being down 3 instead of 6. Missed the kick against Illinois where we only lost by 2. Illinois probably could have gotten a TD in that situation against our horrible defense regardless but you never know. Either way you look at it, the fact is he negatively impacted the team in three big games that contributed to losing and you can’t have that whenever you only have one job. Kickers are head cases and you can’t risk going into another season with one that is not confident.

You seem to forget Heupel botching that whole sequence and icing our own kicker. Our defense also gave up about 113 points that GA game. We just weren’t good, kicking included, coaching included, defense included, sometimes offense.

Add 3 points in the OK game still lose 33-30. All the “butterfly effects” of hitting that kick are conjecture. Still need 4 more points.

We were up 28-27 in the Illinois game when they kicked the GW kick. Not sure how you figure that would have been to tie the game with the FG make. Add 3 points and we’re up 31-27. But since Illinois had the ball first and goal at the 6 with 1:30 and 1 TO, they wouldn’t BE kicking a FG would they? Since they were averaging 5.8 yards per play, odds are pretty strong they punch it in and we still lose.

If you are looking for one play to turn the tide of those games it’s the 2 scoop and scores, not the missed FG…..

A professional kicker, which these kids are these days, should be at zero risk of being "iced".

I'm not usually a fan of crapping on these guys, but Gilbert had one job and was unreliable at best in the clutch. That doesn't cut it in the big leagues we are now.

I agree with most of that. Gilbert didn’t win the game when he could have. But he certainly didn’t lose it. Those games were lost in many other facets of the game. The kicking was just the icing on the cake.

And every weekend in the pros coaches still attempt to “ice” kickers. They are all professionals.

Max always had a look on his face of dread, felt sorry for him, he had a baby face looked like a HS freshman. He hit a very high % of his kicks, missed very few had a great year stat wise on books but all of misses were crucial kicks. Wish Max the best next year but maybe when we play Arky he can go into melt down mode, then he will be a super star in K-Town..
