Was Majors done wrong?

What part of this did Johnny not understand? Of the 7 years at least 3 (87,89 and 91) we were equally talented and 90 we were clearly superior. Scoring 6 points on an Aabama team that went 7-5 was an enbarrassment.

Jonnie's pucker factor was always plus 10 when playing Alabama. Always played no to lose and most the time did. 1990 was the worse, his best team imo and still couldn't get it done.

1. We had 2 OTs taken in the first 8 picks of the draft and a wr #12. And we scored 2 FGs against Alabama?

2.The next week they lost to Penn State 9-0 at home. Then they lost the Fiesta Bowl to Louisville 35-0. Second game of 91 they lost 35-0 to UF. Not exactly the Steel Curtain of the 70s when they beat us in 92.

The fact of the matter is Johnny Choked just like he usually did against the Tide.

That's a multi-layered question with no right answer. Johnny was on one hand demanding the highest salary in the SEC, while heavily hitting the Jack D on the other hand. Fulmer was liked by Joe Johnson, and probably lobbied for the job under the table. Fulmer was rumored to be the favorite for the Auburn job that year, so the Board made a tough decision and went with Fulmer. Probably a lot more happened behind the scenes than we'll ever know publicly.
I had a friend who was on the BOT at the time. You have hit the proverbial nail's head. KPD giving him a ride home instead of a court date was the kicker.

September 20, 1992: Johnny returns to work without a doctor's release and without talking to Dickey.

October 23, 1992: The final straw. Social party with the Board, Johnson, Dickey and others. Majors had much to drink and got into a very loud argument with his former team mate and board member Bill Johnson. It was regarding his contract and he could be heard cursing Bill and board in the entire room.

That was the final straw for Johnson and Dickey. Coming back to work early, disrupting the team after a great start, having problem with assistants at halftime of the LSU game and then the party actions led to his firing. Several coaches tried to leave at halftime at LSU but Fulmer convinced them to stay.

Everyone has an opinion if he was done right or not. Johnson and Dickey made a decision on how they should deal with a disgruntled employee. Happens everyday in life.

Straight from Dr. Johnson to the A.P. 1992.

I can agree with that... those things I mentioned entailed his relationships with others.. IMO, pressure to win at his school led to a breakdown in his relationships with his assistants throughtout his tenure at Tennessee. He brought his assistants with him from Pitt but over time those relationships broke down.

Hope your doing well John..

Seems like Fulmer and Majors got fired for the same reason: Fulmer’s offense.

Johnny came back home after winning a national championship at another school. He was on top but came home when called. This was a a coaching change you dream about, not just your normal former player thing, a former player and from the favorite UT Majors family deciding to leave a loaded team to turn around his alma mater. He deserved more time to get a championship at UT. The fact they attacked him while having heart issues just complicates this fact. He said he deserved better and I believe him without knowing the details.
He "deserved" more than 16 seasons?

He had a very up and down tenure. I think things would have been iffy for him after the 1982 season, if not for the upset win over Alabama. There is no way a coach would survive an 0-6 start now-a-days in their 12th season (1988) during a tenure without a National Championship and only 1 Conference Championship in that time frame. Johnny was shown the patience of Job at Tennessee.

"They attacked him while having heart issues?"

Should he have returned to coaching when he did if he was having "issues" ? Both Doug Dickey and Joe Johnson had recommended waiting.

Just wanted to throw this out there ....

I met Johnny Majors during the Vol Walk before the South Carolina game in 2013. He was wearing a Butch Jones "Brick-by-Brick" tee shirt .... and he was just as nice and approachable as he could be. RIP, coach.

I met him before week 1 in 2019. First time I saw my dad in tears

Even though I understand why Majors had to go at the end, it is so stupid to say we couldn't give one of the top 2-3 coaches in the SEC a proper pay raise because UT had a hiring freeze for professors and it was bad PR

That would be laughable today
I can’t help but think that reasoning was hiding some other issue. Maybe, power struggle? I don’t know. However, it was stated in the above article the buyout money had nothing to do with salary freezes.

Ever take a Management Course? What part of Chief Executive Officer(aka Head Coach) do you not understand. Johnny had the headset on and heard every play that was called in. Same as Fulmer when Sanders was the OC under him.

I was at that game. Longest drive home of my life post-game. Ate at a Chattanooga area waffle house well after midnight.

Loved Coach Majors but he truly HATED Bama. Year after year, whenever third week in October rolled around, you couldn't have pulled a ten penny nail out of his arse hole with a claw hammer.

But yeah...that game was rock bottom of his 'playing not to lose' thinking that he learned from his playing days. Seems there was an Army loss in there that also swung on a blocked kick.

Under Coach Neyland, six points was all we needed for some of our teams to win. We had such a stout defense, just punting back to opponent on third down was oftentimes a good play.

I think the disagreements between coaching staff would be Johnny wanting to fire Fulmer. Based on that article they had to decide between the 2 coaches. I also noted he said John was looking for a raise but he declined because he was not giving the faculty raises. Can you imagine if that happened in todays environment?

Any more wrong than say Richt for Kirby??

Majors was a legend for some reason, but if you strictly grade by W/L & Titles he was merely average even then. And he's what, 5th in win% among UT coaches over 5 year tenure. Bill Battle had a better win %. Not a hater at all, but he was never all that. He also coached in an era when a coach got a dozen years to prove he couldn't win big.

Now, did PF himself do Majors dirty. Many people think so, and are likley correct.
