Was Jackson's hit clean?

Did Janzen Jackson show all out effort to help win or did he make a "thuggish" play?

Everything was incorrect in the post I quoted. Jackson had to slow down, albeit briefly, to launch himself. It definitely did not help him get there faster. As for baseball players, sliding creates resistance, which slow the runner down.
hmm lets see how should i explain this. if i dive forward then i am shortening the distance I have to go by my height. How do i not get there sooner?

I answered thay already.

That's why a lot of baseball players dive straight to the bag at first without really hitting the ground until that moment. Regardless, Jackson's hit was about making it a violent hit which it was. It was the proper hit for that particular play.

Clean hit, hard hit, SEC hit. It's obvious, after watching the New Years Day games these officials aren't used to seeing hard hitting defensive backs. What a wimpy conference they officiate in.

:good!::good!::good!::good!::good!::good!::good!::good!::good!::good!:
Most of the Big Ten players are so far less than SEC players that it showed clearly in the MCB. The Big Ten officials have no idea how we at Tennessee blow up opponents with our ruthless, savage hitting. Look at how we manhandled Memphis State.

Did you know that the average size of a Big Ten DB is 5"9", 155? How hard can Minnie Mouse hit? :ermm:

If JJ's hit is considered a "thuggish" hit, then crown Eric Berry "King Thug".

Knowshon Moreno approves this post.

Guys, we have another psychic on the board.

Give me an effing break. I think you are realizing that you made a stupid statement initially. Give it up. Launching doesn't help you "get there faster." Sliding in baseball doesn't help you "get there faster." Janzen Jackson launched himself to dislodge the ball from the receiver, not so he could "get there faster."

Posted in another thread but still good
Here are the things that I see were botched by the officials in the last 30 seconds. If I am missing something, let me know.

1) An unnecessary roughness penalty on JJ for "leading with the helmet." According to Rule 9-1, Art. 3, subsection a of the NCAA official rules (FR-119) "leading with the helmet means the "crown" or top of the helmet, not a player's shoulder or any other part of the helmet, i.e., facemask)

(Note - Most will say JJ "launched" himself and that it was the proper call. The term launch is not defined by the NCAA rules and is only mentioned one time in the rules (3 times if you count the two ads for sportsmanship found within the rules). Then it only refers to when a player launches any part of his body (shoulder, helmet, etc.) to the HEAD of a defenseless receiver and, in that case, the proper penalty is ejectment not a 15-yard penalty.)

It was a borderline call IMO. JJ had to make a hit to prevent the guy from taking it to the house.

I have a MUCH bigger problem with the fact that they ruled it a completion than I do with the launching penalty. The WR simply did not have control of the ball until he hit the turf out of bounds. IMO, should have been 15 yards from the previous LOS.

You think he would have taken that to the house? To me, he hit him like that to prevent a catch which he did. I agree on the incomplete pass though. He was bobbling that thing the whole way to the ground.

Ok thanks for telling me how I'm feeling

As an impartial fan, I thought the refs got it right. Because the ball was shielded, you couldn't really tell if he had complete possession. But you have to give the receiver the benefit of the doubt, especially since the UT defender made an illegal hit. Think about it this way, what if the uniforms had changed and it was a UT receiver.

It doesn't matter if it had been a db from bama that laid the hit. The hit was still legal.

I am Jackson fan but that was a boneheaded play, followed by a comedy of errors. Additionally i like Brays "attitude" but dont be a douche...act like you have been there before.

I am more of a Jackson fan after this play. Great effort to knock the ball loose. Sad to see some of the unintelligent comments by the less intelligent Vol fans here.

I would not call that a text book hit, I would call it poor tackling form. He takes his eyes off the target and could not wrap him up. I think that is one of the biggest problems to fix, good form and open field tackling.

He was making an attempt to knock the ball loose to prevent the catch. There was no reason to use good tackling form there.

Yeah, I think JJ had to lay out to get anything on him at all. IMO, if he doesn't dive at him... the guy would have made the catch clean and been able to turn the corner.

FWIW, this wasn't JJ's worst play in the game even if it was an illegal hit. He was in position but failed to make the tackle on the long TD run in the first half. That play was truly horrible.
