Can you give more details about this period of Ukrainian independence? Was Kiev/the Ukraine independent of external domination at any time between the Mongol invasion in the 13th century and the collapse of the Soviet Union thirty years ago?

Depends on what you mean by independent. The answer is probably not. It's usually been a puppet of somebody. But considering how they have always been Ukrainians, and not Russians that live in Ukraine. They also fought with the white russians, and every invasion of russia has been supported by numerous Ukrainians, they have definitely wanted their freedom and been willing to spill blood on it.

Yup. Seems like the US is stationing a lot around Poland. The lady I work with who's son is in active duty just got recalled to go to his base and then go wherever theyre sending them. He cant actually tell her yet, but shes pretty sure hes going to Poland.
