War in Ukraine

My question and I apologize f it has already been discussed. Is this whole situation taking place if Trump is still president? I despise Biden but am not knowledgeable enough on the situation to know if Trump changes anything.
I believe it would. You don’t f$$k with crazy folks with nukes.

We are facing major economic economic and social problems too. That’s what has me worried. If gas hits $7 a gallon here as a national average, only the elite will be able to sustain their way of living. It will be catastrophic for America. We will have no choice but to get involved at that point since our leaders refuse to make us energy independent.
Wait, so we need to get involved because of energy concerns?

Another question and I apologize again if it has already been discussed. What is China's involvement and how does this impact them? Are they tacitly approving of Putin? Does it have any significance for China and Hong Kong/Taiwan?

That is a good question. I think it less likely for these two reasons:

Trump is a better negotiator.
Trump is a wild card and unpredictable. The Russians, I believe, love predictability and the current White House is pretty predictable it seems in their response. Massive Sanctions!

Reminds me of the scene from Inglorious Basterds where Sgt Ray says he'll get reprimanded and he's been reprimanded before.

Trump was never going to put his foot down on the invasion of Ukraine. I’m not even sure he would be willing to sanction them.

Probably. But they’re likely to get them without the US or Europe blinking an eye it appears.

I'm fairly certain Biden is confident in his intelligence and knows it's only going to be days before the full scale invasion. You don't build up troops like that and then say the things Putin did only to stop at recognizing those territories as independent. I expect them to hold off on sanctions until Russian troops advance past the Donbas because that's literally the only leverage they have.

And in any case, separatists don't control nearly as much territory as they claim. It won't be long before Russian troops are engaged in full scale combat.

Did not say he would. The problem with Trump is unpredictability. It would not be a surprise to see Trump move military forces to the area ( assuming it would have even gotten this far to begin with) and for Putin, the question would be "Will Trump do it?"

Putin is not doing anything where there is a significant chance of loss. He cannot afford to take chance to see his military potentially crushed by a technologically superior US military that advertises female soldiers with two moms in San Francisco. Not saying that would be the result, I am saying Putin is risk adverse.

His announcements today, etc, are nothing more than measuring the response from the West and what his risk is. I believe, and suspect by now he does as well, that NATO is going to hand him the Ukraine.
