Von Pearson Update

Ok I'm officially pissed now too. I've strangely stayed positive believing we would see something, anything, by this point. Now after that press conference I'm alittle over it. Feel bad for Von, hope something somehow changes soon. Can't keep punishing him if there's nothing saying he did anything wrong(even if he did).

So I guess since the investigation will not actually be closed he's just set in limbo for how long??

Freak, can we just lock this thread until Jones tells us that Von is (or isn't) coming back? There obviously isn't going to be an update anytime soon and this appears to be the AJ case 2.0. I think burying this thread will help folks move on and forget about Von being apart of team 119.

Yeah...we'll just stop talking about it. :wink2:

It's pretty much what needs to happen, because dude isn't coming back this season. If they're already discussing him not enrolling until January, then forget about it. I stayed optimistic until a couple of hours ago. VP isn't coming back for 2015, IMO.

Spot on.

Everyone needs to just relax about it. Our 3rd starting receiver will be Josh Smith, and he's a very sound option at WR. Sucks losing Pearson, but we are loaded with talent at WR.

I wonder if he will agree to a RS or if, because of his age, he'll just go ahead and go pro.

He needs to be cleared or the pros won't touch him. He could use an injury free showcase year to market himself, but if he gets to workout for teams and shows out, who's to know? Doubt he gets drafted.

I don't think the issue recently has been if he will be cleared but when. Even at his age, if possible, he needs to play another year because yeah, right now I think he's a borderline guy.

I don't think he's proven enough to go to the NFL. I remember watching CP and thinking, "man, this guy is 1 and done for sure"...I never really got that excitement from Von. I think he would have been great this year, but as optimistic as I normally am, I just don't think he comes back this season.

Hopefully Von's indefinite suspension/ruined football career despite a lack of charges or evidence is enough to appease Anita Wadhwani. Wouldn't want her to write another negative article about Tennessee athletics.

It's really disappointing. On all fronts. For Von, the team, the school, the staff.

Its hard to find a logical reason for it to take this long. At this point, just speculating based on the time duration of the investigation, there is no new information that could arise to the level needed to press charges. Everything in that arena is already fully inspected, all witnesses interviewed, etc.

It's reasonable to assume any new information would only increase his chances of not having to encounter a potential charge. If that is the case, what keeps the investigation pending?

From the school administration's perspective, the same applies. The only information at this point can be favorable. If there needs to be something addressed, level a defined suspension. At this point, if they do get to the bottom of it and he is at no evidenced fault, but his behavior was suspect, do they consider any disciplinary actions already levied? He's been suspended from all activities for months.

The whole issue is miserable to watch.

Oh OK, the one thing i saw from him regarding uniforms was that Tennessee would be emblazoned across the front of the football uniforms, and that ended up not being true at all.

I never said that about the football uniforms.

In response to someone complaining about the font, I said they should get used to it because it was going to be across the chest of our uniforms for the foreseeable future. As in, where "Tennessee" was previously depicted in a variety of fonts.

The school is afraid, IMO. Afraid of bad press and afraid of the feds clamping down on their investigation.

All information we know points to Von ultimately being innocent, but who knows if he will be reinstated even if the DA reviews the supposed new evidence and drops the investigation. At this point it really seems like there's some weird motive that's keeping Von from seeing the field that goes beyond simply letting the investigation run its course.

The ultimate outcome of this is bad for Tennessee on all counts. Bad because the team lost one of its best players. Bad because it paints Tennessee in a bad light two different ways: one for having another rape allegation (which has made headlines at least once per week going back to April) and another because of negative recruiting.

Other coaches can either spin it and say that Butch is fostering a bad environment at Tennessee or, if Pearson is ultimately cleared, they can say that Tennessee turns its back on innocent players if someone makes up false allegations against them.

DP, Butch's "no change to his status" was far from a significant status update. I get the impression you expected Butch to say something he ended up not saying....

As of last night, there was supposed to be a significant update on his status. The fact that there wasn't is a great relief to me.

well yeh. Obviously. Not a relief to anyone. This whole thing is a disaster. Just gonna keep dragging it out with no answers i guess.

Butch plays his cards close to the vest. I wouldnt give up on VP for this season just yet.
Dont be surprised if something doesnt change rather drastically in the next week or so, but then again maybe not......

Yes, those are the options. . . :)

Darago is literally the only person reporting that the federal investigation is preventing VP from rejoining the team.

Which might be true to some extent, but if the DA gets new evidence tomorrow and declines to press charges, there's no way he's not reinstated, regardless of any investigation occurring.

Actually, I've heard Swain say several times that earlier in the summer he felt good about Von getting cleared and rejoining the team....until they announced this federal investigation of Tennessee and about 120 other universities. He now says that the potential pressure and scrutiny of that investigation could hurt his chances of reinstatement even if he's never charged. Puts his chance of returning at 50-50.

This is where it becomes shameful.

I haven't said much about the whole issue, but it's pretty sad to see the lives messed up on all sides of the issue. The worst part is how the impact the alleged victims family, Von, the school, and every one involved hinges on everybody trying to make it looks pretty and neat to the Feds. Would like to see enough backbone to make the call one way or the other.

Of course, it's easy to take shots at the decision makers from the sidelines. I know that, personally, I'm glad I'm not in their shoes.

It should be pretty simple to make a decision based on the facts. Facts are black and white.
