Vols won't play USC to open '11 season

Do you agree with this decision.

Lane should call out Florida or Bama. They're the top dogs in this conference. Those teams have a chance to beat the trojans though, so he wouldn't do that.

Exactly. I imagine an Urban Meyers-Lane Kiffin matchup would draw lots of attention, if that is what he's looking for.

He's the type that burns bridges everywhere. Eventually he'll burn every one and wind up pumping gas in South Carolina.:)

Read on TOS by a very credible poster that Hamilton said on the radio today the CF deal was discussed while Kiffin was still the head coach at UT. Hammy basically implied that Kiffin knew this was not a possibility before he told the story to ESPN. Just another immature PR move. One of many to come while SC is in the trash can.

Hamilton discussed all this on the radio.

It's not really top secret information.

But that's not what he's looking for. He wants to play a rebuilding team, with a new coach, and a personal vendetta, on national tv, in the talent rich Atlanta area. He wants free publicity and an easy win. I'm glad to see that we won't give him that satisfaction.

Even if we weren't any of the things listed above, why on Earth would we play LSU, Bama, Florida, and USC in the same year? Those teams account for 6 of the last 7 NC's. I understand wanting a strong ooc schedule, but that seems pretty daunting.

why wouldn't UT want to play USC for national publicity, recruiting, etc.? Not a good move.

would it still have been a good move if hamilton would have said yes and the vols were humiliated on national television?

why do something Kiffin wants us to do? and we are already got UNC and Cincy in 11

I think it was a good move that we countered with 12 and 13 home and home, but I am not surprised USC declined

I think Kiffy hit the panic button and released this spin story about a refusal to play 2011 game to try and keep more players from leaving the Trogans team.

Next thing he will probably try is admitting to the NCAA key areas to investigate from the Tennessee 2009 season..... What could happen to him???

The Schedule is already made. We would probably lose money coming out of one of our OOC games. Come on guys, it's not about being scared or getting beat, it's about money. That's what it's always about. Yea it will be on national TV but so will the other games.

This is Kiffin's way of trying to one-up us for stealing his player(s...). He knew Mike would say no because schedules are made years in advance, not one season prior.

This just gives ESPN something else to talk about, Kiffin loves having his name in the media and looking like the big bad bully, and I'm sure he is using this as a motivation factor for his remaining players... "Look guys, they are afraid to play you, that's why they are trying to steal you away from your home,".

I wouldn't have excepted either, we have a pretty unique and challenging schedule for 2011 already.

And dont let me forget, it wouldn't help us out much in the rankings because USC won't be included in the Coaches Poll, that means no BCS points for beating them since even if they are undefeated, they'll be unranked.

I didn't think it was top secret. As I said , I read where it was on the radio. It just seemed like it was explained pretty clear and I hadn't read it stated that way here.

Changing schedules is just that easy. Economic breach happens all the time.

I disagree with you, emphatically. Show me where changing schedules in a major conference (let alone two) happens "all the time." I've seen it on occasion, and only for a good reason - but never on a regular basis

If by economic breach, you mean people failing to pay their debts I agree with you.

Kdouche would have to dump Minnesota and we'd only have to pay $200K to get out of our firs game, but there's still no upside for us.

Boss made a good point that would have been funny. The "official" TN response should have been. "Mr Kiffin, and USC,
We would LOVE to schedule a home and home with you. We, however are in the business of HONORING OUR COMMITMENTS and sticking to our plans. We currently have games scheduled on the proposed dates for the matchup. We wish to go forward with promises and contracts made to play these games. We would, however, love to schedule a game on a date (year) that isn't already commited to."

VolDad....dude you need to keep up. Gary Stokan started and ran the Atlanta Sports Council for years. He left that group to head up the CFA games both pre and post season. He KNOWS his stuff. For someone who lives in the Atlanta area I cannot believe you don't know this.

Gary is on 680 the fan - Now. He said that this was discussed months ago and that Derek said “give me 3 years to get my players and I would love to play USC”. Implied Kiffin leaked it now for publicity.

also said Lane wanted to treat it as a sort of "bowl game".

I dont think we'll have to worry about BCS points

Why? Do you really want to see Tenn get obliterated on national Tv?

Do you think Nick Saban thought that way when Bama faced 2 season openers against top 10 ranked teams ? Those 2 games put Bama back in the national spotlight against Clemson and Va.Tech. Auburn had the same chance this year and turned it down. Scheduling problems? Sure. LSU worked it out, Auburn could have too. Tn. should have taken this game , it would have done more for the program, look what this did for Bama to knock off a top 10 ranked team the first game.

Playing a Clemson team that annually pisses itself when facing a team anywhere near competitive and playing USC is two different things.

Also, the talent level at Bama was a whole lot better than Tennessee's will be in 2011.

It would be great if Tennessee went down there in 2011 and stomped USC.

However, it doesn't make fiscal sense or common sense to do it.

You split revenues down the middle. How many USC fans are going to travel to Atlanta to watch USC play an overmatched Tennessee team? Very few.

Why share the gate revenue with a team bringing a few thousand fans?

Tennessee is going to make more money playing North Texas.

Lose to USC and validate Kiffin's comments.

A quick question reguarding the 2011 schedule...

I just went and checked out our 2011 schedule and I was under the assumption that we were playing a home and home with Oregon. Why aren't we playing in Eugene in 2011? Will this game be in 12, 13, or 14 or is it just one game in 2010? Obviously I'm wrong but I could swear that we were playing Oregon in 2011

*Edit* Nevermind I found a 2013 schedule and see we're playing them on 9-14-2013 in Eugene.
