My same friends in Nashville who sold me on the typical big kid playing football at a single A school, NCS, told me this 6'1" >325lb kid out of Pearl Cohn told me he is the real deal and a sleeper, as was Bituli. They haven't steered me wrong yet!

It was?
Our (SEC) pass defense was ranked (slightly) higher than our run defense and we ranked higher in interceptions than we did in sacks.

Our DL got virtually no pressure on opposing QBs all year long and when SEC teams wanted to run it last year on us, they ran it.

I’d argue that neither our DL nor our secondary was very good, and that our LBs were our weakest link last year....but I don’t think the case can be made that our DL was our strength last year in any way. I thought our two young corners played as well if not better than anybody else on our defense.

I’m with you in that I don’t agree that Rocker is in any trouble at all, but I don’t think our DL was our defensive strength.

We were #55 nationally in rush defense, 85th in passing, but 97th in opponent QBR (you could argue this is on both dl and DBs).

I would just say run defense, as a hole defensive unit, in general was a strength, pass defense a weakness. Both rush and pass D are somewhat on the all units, but weighted differently. I'd weigh run D heavily on the DL, while pass D mostly on DBs, but also on DE/OLBs or any other pass rushers.

Not always easy to delineate DL vs LB vs DBs. I think this DL was better at run stoppage (best in a decade for us) than pass rushing.

I was looking at some photos of practice and have a question. What the heck is the weird sex toy looking contraption on the right in this photo:

You make some pretty good points. But for whatever reason last year, inexperience running the 3-4 or schemes, personnel, or any other variable one wants to list, that 97th opponent QBR rating was real. IMO it was real due to the fact, see the all the variables mentioned previously, in that we could not consistently pressure the QBs. Most of our opponents last year leisurely looked around, went through their progressions two or three times, and passed the ball without seeing the ground or getting hammered. That part of our defensive game MUST get better for us to improve IMO.

Those have been on every football practice field since like....forever. Middle school, high school, college...everyone uses them.
Right. Less fancy ones back in the day were made tires on the steel frame; probably plenty of those still in use.

I may be a little too critical here, but the team looked sluggish to me. They seemed to be going through the drills at 75%. I get that that are not in football shape yet, and they are all a little heavier and maybe lethargic, but they don't seem to be flying around as much as I expected. Maybe this is just how it looks from limited tape to view and I hope that this is not the way that the entire practice looks.

They’re in 100% early spring form, but people see what they want.
I am not trying to see anything, and I know that there are probably some things that stick out to me more than to others. I just didn't see them moving all that fast IMO. I hope I'm wrong.

Perhaps it's due to my sordid past and wicked imagination, but, you'd have to be more specific about _which_ sex toy looking contraption you're referencing about.

When it comes to leverage the win usually goes to the guy who is lower, if you're an OL 6' 2" or taller, you're going to have difficulty getting underneath our guy if he plays NT.
under rated...imo

Everyone is complaining about the lack of returning players on the D-line as far as starters go but honestly I think we will be ok and gradually get better as the season goes. I’m really excited about Gooden and Solomon...John mincey is a guy I keep hearing about as well. It’s hard to take 4 years seniors who played a 4-3 they’re whole collegiate careers and try to turn them in to a 3-4 scheme.

I think no matter what we will look night and day better at every position this year.
