We had a couple of really good days. We need many more. That’s a gauntlet of a schedule. We didn’t just lose guys to the portal. Graduation and early NFL entrants. Plus, Sattewhite was your back up center and played a good bit. That’s a loss. Warren also played a decent number of snaps in back up roll. You completely left out Gibson and while he didn’t play, he’s without question the best CB that was left on campus.Guys who contributed last year who left in the portal: Heard, Herring, Ross, Peyton Lewis Boo Carter. That's five players. We have 8 immediate contributors added from the portal. I'm excluding the tackle from LSU because I don't think he's a starter. Also, in regards to Heard? He asked for $3 million and wasn't willing to move to the right side so Sanders could take over the LT slot. Like get real dude, we return four starters on OLine. Last year we returned one. I just want you to know that your discomfort with everything is completely unwarranted. Our coaches are absolutely killing it right now
Heupel knew there were changes and needs that had to be addressed this offseason. He's basically addressed every single one. His O-lines blocked for 2500 yards every season for 4 years then for 2000 last year while blocking for the most prolific passing offense at Tennessee in over a decade. You also don't get to take away the coaching overhaul when evaluating the portal additions. We're talking about having to recruit Knowles himself. Heupel sold himself and his offense to one of the greatest defensive minds in college football and the guy took him up on his offer. With that hiring, Heupel reaps the benefits and credit of anyone who comes with Knowles. Including Poindexter, Campbell, and yes... Coleman. This overhaul is exactly what this team needed and I'm positive that we're headed in the right direction. We had a couple of really good days. We need many more. That’s a gauntlet of a schedule. Knowles is killing it. The CB from Auburn is also a good pick up. We still have major holes. Desperately need a quality RB, more help at corner, safety, and DL. Nuff said about QB.
Not sure what to believe about Heard, but he didn’t improve as the year went along. Hell, none of them did. I still think the major problem at OL is Elerbee. I don’t see any 90s level lines until he’s replaced. Heupel is going to ride or die with how he does and so far his washout rate on HS linemen is pretty ****ing terrible.
The concerns are most certainly warranted. There’s no question UT is concerned based on how active they’ve been. Knowles evaluations revealed substantial roster deficiencies. They’ve struck out at least as much as they’ve hit. I know for a fact they have a big bank roll for transfers. Not TT big, but significant. They absolutely will be in the top 10 in NIL spending this year. Unfortunately, a lot of that is in the freshman class, which is almost a 3rd of the roster. I know how much they offered for the RB that signed with Michigan. The Knowles hire paid off big in getting those 4. Aside from that, it’s pretty, meh.
And how often do teams like Indiana come along?Indiana LOS dominating both sides against everyone. We haven't even shown flashes of looking like that. And they're doing it without the #3 ranked class in the nation. So what's the solution? It's obviously not 5 star talent. Is it strength and conditioning? Accountability? Coaching?
No one is denying the ranking of the recruiting class, but the portal flows both ways, and the faucet has been running out more than it has in. It’s just the reality of immediate needs versus trying to build a program old style. How many of those true freshman will contribute significantly this coming year? The wash out rate on HS players is already high. With the portal? Cone on. Look at what we’ve lost out of the portal. Let’s not act like we weren’t on here “booming” those kids when they signed. We’ve essentially lost all our proven depth on OLine. We return a lot, but injury could prove devastating. We lost a 5-star signee, who was one of our only returning edge guys. Our most experienced DB at an already thin and inexperienced position.

Of the 25 players we put in the portal...way more than usual...there are about 5 guys that the staff likely actually wanted to keep. Ross, Warren, etc. The other 20 were either asked to leave or mutual decisions because they simply weren't gonna play here. They had been recruited over in our 25 and 26 classes that are miles better than the ones before them. This 26 class from HS is THE best class in at least 20 years. The narrative that we lost a bunch of good players simply isn't true. We lost a few good players who asked for more money than we felt the market says they are worth...like Heard who wanted $3M to play Tackle next year. Not a brilliant move when Perry has shown he can do it for much less...AND we landed another 5* Tackle Osenda in the 26 class who will be the other bookend to 5* Sanders that's only 1 year ahead of him. The good thing is when Osenda is ready to take over Right Tackle, Perry can either slide inside to Guard OR be the 6th man and give rest/fill in for both Tackles AND both Guards.
Our coaches know what they're doing. We just brought in PSU DTackle, Edge better than Ross, LB with 103tackles this year, Safety, and Corner. All of which have a year in Knowles system already. Brilliant portal moves. We have 10 guys so far and I am excited about every one of them. Including a better kicker AND a better return man for punts and kicks.
We are KILLING the portal. Still need another DTackle, DE, a QB of some kind, and a RB to join the rotation. I bet my left nut we get every one of those things and probably more. Clearly we are willing to spend big money in this cycle to rebuild the defense and fill a couple holes elsewhere. We bought the most desirable and highest paid DC in the nation in Knowles. There are only 4 teams in the portal whose new guys average a rank of 88 or better. UT, IND, TT and 1 more I can't remember. Ours is #1 in average rating now with 10guys at 89.83 . We are getting experienced GOOD players that have produced in power4 play. There is no reason to worry. CJH and staff are absolutely killing it and have ALWAYS done a better job than our SEC rivals at roster retention except maybe UGA. We will be a good team in 26 that's gonna drop a few games vs our gauntlet...and we are setting up for a playoff run in 27 and 28 to try and win a Title. Great time to be a VOL
