SimontonEasy to see why Jeremy Pruitt is so high on Alontae Taylor. He’s long and can run. Just displayed great body control with a slick INT on a deep pass off Keller Chryst.
During some of the pre-practice, walk-through snaps, we saw Jarrett Guarantano working at QB with what appeared to be the first-team offense. RBs Ty Chandler and Tim Jordan both worked with the first-team offense, while the No. 1 offensive line consisted of, from left to right, Drew Richmond, Ryan Johnson, Brandon Kennedy, Riley Locklear and Marcus Tatum. Dominick Wood-Anderson was at tight end, and Marquez Callaway, Brandon Johnson and Josh Palmer were the receivers.
On defense, the starters appeared to be Kyle Phillips, Shy Tuttle and Alexis Johnson on the DL, with Darrell Taylor and Jonathan Kongbo at OLB and Daniel Bituli and Darrin Kirkland Jr. at ILB. The corners were Baylen Buchanan and Alontae Taylor, and Nigel Warrior and Micah Abernathy were at safety.
CallahanDominick Wood-Anderson with a nice catch in traffic in 7-on-7 work, going up in front of Trevon Flowers - with another defender in the area - to make the grab.
JT Shrout dropped an absolute dime to a well covered walk-on receiver (didn’t get the number) on a wheel route for a TD in 7 on 7.
Guarantano has one to Jordan Murphy down the seam for a score and also fit one in a tight window but Marquez Callaway has it go through his hands.
Baylen Buchanan and Brandon Davis each had nice pass breakups in 7 on7 work. There was only one pick I saw and couldn’t tell who got it.
Wes tells me the pick was by Bryce Thompson and he was matched up with Jauan Jennings.

David UbbenAlontae Taylor picked off both QBs in today’s practice. If you’re looking for a true freshman who can make an immediate impact, he’s probably your guy. Physical, fearless, and obviously great ball skills. He was a WR in high school.
Daily BeaconTwo of Tennessee’s freshman corners, Bryce Thompson and Alontae Taylor, have snagged interceptions at the #Vols open practice. Taylor has come down with two
I saw more tight end usage and lead blockers coming out of the backfield on runs. I think the Vols’ coaching staff really like what they have in Dominick Wood-Anderson, and from what I saw on Sunday, I can see why. He plays very physically, doesn’t shy away from contact, and moves well even for his size.
I thought Guarantano made some really nice throws and was able to complete some difficult passes once receivers were getting covered by defensive backs, but Chryst also threaded the needle and made a few impressive throws of his own. Freshman J.T. Shrout has a very impressive arm, and he can make just as many throws as the more experienced QBs on the roster.
Ryan Johnson botched a snap to Chryst on one of the drills, and I thought Brandon Kennedy looked like he was settling in at center when he was on the field. We got to see Riley Locklear at guard and Marcus Tatum at tackle as well as Johnson at guard. Drew Richmond practiced mostly at tackle as well. Devante Brooks practiced at guard along with Ollie Lane, and Nathan Niehaus was at tackle as well as Chance Hall.
Alontae Taylor is showing off some great skill at cornerback already. He intercepted a pass during a drill today and looks fairly poised at that position.
Nathanael RutherfordWhen he’s healthy, I love getting to watch Shy Tuttle play. He’s embraced the role of a space eater so far in this new 3-4 defensive scheme, and he plays aggressively off the line and does a great job eating up two linemen when charging into the backfield. If he stays healthy, he could be very disruptive this season.
SimontonFive standouts (IMO) from Tennessee's open practice: 1. CB Alontae Taylor 2. OLB Jonathan Kongbo 3. QB Jarrett Guarantano 4. TE Dominick Wood-Anderson 5. WR Cedric Tillman
... it was quite clear who the top quarterback on the field was Sunday. Jarrett Guarantano threw strikes in both pass-skeleton work, 7-on-7 and 11-on-11. Compared to a year ago, JG was much better with his footwork and decision-making. He didn’t hold onto the ball for forever and he routinely found his check-downs quickly. He had one really poor throw (was baited by Alontae Taylor) but he responded with a bomb on his very next attempt. That’s growth. He didn’t his head after a poor pass. He got right back in the huddle and made a play.
Josh Palmer showed great body control to catch a long pass from Guarantano, but the sophomore also dropped a couple would-be touchdowns. Brandon Johnson was smooth, while Marquez Callaway had his moments, too. The two wideouts who stood out the most, IMO, were sophomore Jordan Murphy and freshman Cedric Tillman. Murphy has become a better route runner. He had a big touchdown grab from JG, too.
Without a doubt, Alontae Taylor was the star Sunday. The freshman corner looked extremely comfortable and natural for a kid who has had less than a dozen practices there. Taylor was physical and fearless.
JT Shrout was solid in 7-on-7s, flashing a big arm. He had a couple long touchdowns on busted coverages. However, when the Vols switched to 11-on-11 work, the freshman really struggled. He had a couple tipped passes and at least two INTs, including a pick-six by Cheyenne Labruzza.
SimontonDuring 11-on-11 work, the Vols ran several different sub-package looks. During a couple plays, Tennessee had three true safeties on the field at the same time.
