Vols Practice Thread #3

Also, whoever is the QB is fine with me... both looked good... JG checked out of five plays that I heard... good ball placement from
Both.

DB’s had several busts in coverage today (part of the process) it was two high install today so didn’t see as many runs today.

Gotta love hearing Coach Rumph and Coach Rocker Coach.... DB’s looked smooth and more aggressive... you can see the progression in technique and body comp. good stuff today.

I’m not talking about the media, I’m talking about the posters on here. It’s ironic to me that everyone talks about how bad a coach BJ was but said the same things about his practice films last year before the season started. Point being, proof is in the pudding. Saying we look like a SEC team now is just a bunch of blow hard nonsense, because the exact same thing was said for the past 10 years of preseason hype
Fair enough, but if you think this staff isn’t going to coach circles around the previous, then you’re very wrong. I think that’s what most are hyped about. This team is young, but I certainly think they have more potential than most give them, and could surprise a few teams. A lot of these guys....this will prob be the first year they’ve gotten quality coaching and have been committed to a decent S&C program. That’s what excites me. We all put on the orange shades this time of year, but the positives outweigh the negatives so let’s ride.

It's called being a fan. The realist in me agrees with everything you just said. The homer in me wants to grab hold of anything positive I can, to give me hope that this year will be different. That's what these threads are all about.

It's hard gaining a grasp on the players from fan day as practice was very high paced and players were constantly rotating from one position drill to the next, that is until the offense/defense drills near the end. After all it is only one practice, but from watching it my biggest take away was from observing Coach Pruitt.

Coach Pruitt is very hands on the defense and doesn't tolerate softness or laziness of any sort. He demands perfection on defense to the point where it seemed like he was micromanaging. Not to say this is a negative thing, as Coach Barnes has shown this method to be extremely successful. But, from observing, it seemed after every play, or thereabout, Pruitt would reprimand some defender for doing something wrong. It didn't matter who you were, whether you made a great play the play before, or anything. Pruitt made sure his players knew when they did something wrong and no one got away with a mistake.

I think two specific examples from practice that I think prove my point.

During 7v7 drills there was a play where Alontae Taylor made a nice interception while covering Josh Palmer. Well the following play, the QB (can't remember who it was) went right back to Palmer who this time made a nice catch over Taylor and then into the endzone. Alontae then went over to Palmer and gave him a celebratory pat on the back for the nice play and then went to the sideline. Well Pruitt made sure to follow him and had a word. Not sure what was said, but from his body language I don't think he was happy with Taylor.

Next, My favorite moment was this one instance where a player went to the sideline to get stretched by a trainer in the middle of a drill and as he sat down, Pruitt ran over, near the fan side, and yelled at him that "we don't got time fort that, get back on the field"!

All this to say, I think our defense is in really good hands. I'm not sure Pruitt gives one lick about the offense right now. lts all
about setting the tone and physicality with the defense. I think there is some Saban-ess in Pruitt in that he will be satisfied with anything short of perfection and even then that might not be enough lol. Anyways, I have hope that regardless of how we look opening day, Pruitt will make sure this defense and team is improving and not settling for complacency.

This was another example of my earlier post where Pruitt was very demanding, but this time even of his coaches. I noticed that he seemed to be bickering, yelling at one of his coaches to stop standing around and do something in the middle of a drill, but couldn't clarify what was all said from where I was at. I guess this is what happened lol

This is actually video of the play I was referring to. You can see at the end of the clip Alontae was headed toward Murphy to congratulate him. That's what Pruitt did not take kindly too.

These practice threads always crack me up. Exactly the same things were being said last year.

That cant be right. Many on VN has said that Chryst was the clear cut better QB and he was coming here to start. Those same people have trashed JG even though his stats are better than Chrysts. That, despite KC having a much, much, much better overall team.

Can't really say his stats are better besides pass percentage.

Who do we have to play FB? I thought we were going two TE? ill hang up...
Seems like Jaquain Blakely (was a DE last year) and Austin Pope are the two guys primarily playing FB for us.

We’ll definitely see some 2 TE looks on offense, but judging on what USC looked like when Helton was there and why CSU looked like under Will Friend, we’ll still probably be in 11 personnel (1 back and 1 TE) more than anything else. But we’ll see a bigger variance of personnel.

You guys can call me crazy, but I think this is the year Dontavius Blair finally takes off those helmet stickers.

No it wasnt really. If you count sacks as passing plays...and you really, really should if you care at all about purity of statistics.... JG had a completion percentage of 52%.

Yes his actual completion percentage was 52 percent . He had a sack rate of 15.8. Which is far as i can tell is the worst ever. For 129 teams in the last 12 years only 4 college qbs had sack rates of above 15. Thats like 900+ game seasons .

Thats 1,548 qb seasons. Only 5 seasonswith sack rates that high.

Jg wae one of those five, and the highest of them all.

Real completion percentage rounds up to 52%, which sucks real bad.

Yep, and we always have these posts pointing out this trend. If you are a fan, then you want to talk about your sport in a positive way. If that wasn't the case then these boards wouldn't even exist. Of course then I guess there are some people that just get their entertainment out of raining on everybody's parade. One for instance last year I am certain that no one was discussing how will alontae Taylor looked at cornerback. In that some things do change year to year.

All I’m saying is that people were saying the exact same things to the videos of practice preseason last year. You can’t tell ish on these films. It translates into exactly no predictive value of the season.
True, but, at least, these practices don't have the distractions of piped in music and Mr. Microphone yammering while assistants are trying to teach skills.

The point you're trying to make here is very valid.

But you're "real completion percentage" is a silly, made up stat that nobody uses. Counting every sack as an incompletion is beyond useless. And if you take that into account for Chyst, his completion would fall below 50%. But you shouldn't, because that's not how anybody charts completion percentage.
