I can't wait to send these anazing comments to him. Thank youAs a from the cradle lifetime Vol fan in all sports, Zander is one of my favorite Vols in any sport, all-time. I never thought he’d be a weekend starter. He became one of the best big game players in Vol history. And he did it while just being a regular, down to Earth, quirky, funny kid.

Did I think a coach would start a soft throwing lefty? Nope. Did I think Z could do it? Yep. Did CMo have his doubts and said he thought Z would never be a weekend guy? Yep. Would CMo get between Z and anyone coming after Z because he knew Z wouldn’t fight? Absolutely freaking yes.
Just like every other kid on the team needed; you need more than 1 inning playing time on a Tuesday night. Pitchers definitely need repetition. And Z was out of sorts his freshman year. His senior year was covid and he was coming back as the starter again. 2020 was his "revenge tour". He was going to take down the Goliath of teams that year. Nope. Shut down after a few games. No playing summer ball. Get to campus in Fall and boys could come back because of missing 2020. Threw 12? innings in spring 2021. Of course he was in the same boat as all the other boys, but I know it made a difference for him, in terms of development. Would I change a thing? I don't know. I asked him about it. I asked would you keep it exactly the way it happened or would you give up the last 2 months of your college career, if you could have been a Doe, Beam, Dallas and been drafted in 1- 2-3 rounds? Even though he was irked about not playing regularly, and went undrafted, he would take the last months. I am going to ask him again though...
The quirky, funny, but does not know he is funny, is still there. He was hilarious as a kid. Played basketball, baseball, football (yes, he would throw the football as Big Ben and then chase after it like Heinz Ward, announcing every move along the way (and perfect spiral almost immediately once he could throw with one hand), hockey; by himself in the driveway for years.
My random thought about his last 2 months; yes, they tweeked something for the better and of course he was pitching regularly, so that helped. But I can't help thinking; all those batters, all year, were almost consistently use to receiving and hitting 90-100 mph pitches. Then comes along Z. Throwing 67 mph. Then a 88. Then a 64. Then 84. And as superstar Charlie Condon showed us; he could not hit off Z. And the rest is history
