Vols flip Gooch from AUB!

He is to big for the new offensive line.

The last two guys who coached at UT and wanted "finesse" blocking and small "nimble" olinemen.

How'd that work out?

Not sure there is a place in college football for a kid that big on the oline

Maybe CH asked him to play TE or DT
UF UGA and couple other SEC schools kicking the tires here. Plenty of 6’7” OTs out there, weight would be addressed in S&C, any can get him down to 350. He can play well at 350.

Normally that might be true. But the extra Covid year will return several guys to UT that would have been gone. The transfer portal is full of guys that don't have a landing spot yet. This is a unique time when you can cut guys loose much easier if you don't think they fit you or if they really want out.
Seniors coming back is perfect timing for UT. As far as transfers, probably one or two spots left for this year. Signed 21, even tho 3 were released, they still count as initial counters and count against your 25. 2 guys have transferred in, 3 if you count Big Kat but doubt he signed. That leaves 2 spots left for transfers.

Now, perhaps can encourage some to enroll later and be counted towards 2022, but that will take away spots from the recruiting class.

If he's too big for the offensive line then there's a big problem. Look at the teams in the playoffs, any of them trading big guys for small guys just because they're quick?
No there is 20 big AND quick O linemen in a class and 4-5 teams get 18 of them every year.
The other 105 teams can’t use their blueprint for success

Where has it been said that he wants small and nimble OL? I would think the fact that we just signed a JUCO kid that is 6-6 315 lbs would say otherwise? Plus if you look at UCF roster the OL isnt small. Looks completely different than what Butch was going for. Most seem to be around 6-4 to 6-6 and 290 to 315.

Iowa State got turned around by recruiting tall guys and hanging weight on them, slow or not. Bum Phillips was quoted once about a good big man beats a great little man every time.

That's what Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne did at Nebraska

Google is hard. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ https://ucfknights.com/sports/football/roster

THIS guy (Michael Oher) says otherwise ;)

Oh.... and you know the HS football coach who coached him up? Hugh Freeze - so, perhaps its just a need for coaching, cause it seemed to work out ok for this "diamond in the rough" ;)

You have to understand, it is essential to build the narrative that Heupel is a bad coach. If we let it get out that he might succeed, he might actually succeed, and then we wouldn't get a new coach in 3 years.

Different level of ball being played, and a different set of expectations.

For instance, we crucified Butch Jones for losing at South Carolina by 3 in his best season. Matt Campbell lost by 17 to the Rajun Cajuns this year. At home. The Big12 isn't really a power 5 quality conference, and their annual OOC drubbings and losses against FCS opponents essentially make that irrefutable. He deserves credit, but Iowa State would be lower than Vandy in the SEC. Otherwise, he's gifted 3 conference wins against 3 of the worst programs in D1 with Kansas, Kansas State, and Baylor.
