Vols Fall Practice #9

The opposite of this. Underthrown deep balls give the WR a chance to make a play. Their WR always has the advantage in those situations. An overthrow gives the WR no chance.

Milton and Nico could’ve used a lot more underthrows.
A deep overthrow gives no one a play on the ball.

An underthrow is essentially a 50-50 ball, at best, and may possibly hit the defender in stride forcing offensive pass interference.

Both players have equal rights to make a play on the ball. I'd rather the ball be in front of my receiver than in front of the defender.

A 50-50 ball is a turnover half the time. An overthrow on a fly route is rarely a turnover.

No it isn’t. That’s just flat wrong.

There’s a reason teams intentionally under throw the deep ball. There’s a reason announcers consistently said the last 2 years that UT QBs would be better off under throwing.

The WR has the advantage in multiple ways, including the likelihood of drawing PI vs getting called for PI. He has a better bead on the ball. He’s usually taller. DBs can’t touch the WR without turning their heads on time or they’re called for PI.

It isn’t remotely close to 50-50. It’s an integral part of some offenses.

I am sorry but a record of 5-6 with 24 TD’s and 13 INT’s and a QBR of 66 doesn’t scream gamer to me. To each his own though.
Anyone care to take a stab?

5-6 is a team record....can't put that on JA. A State D was 12th in Scoring D in the Sunbelt. Gave up 46 TDs 14 FGs and 4537 yards. Did the O turnovers hurt them, sure.,

I know we've seen a lot of overthrown passes and I hate to be "picky" but..... Yikes.

I would rather see passes sail 10yds than come back the wrong way.
The balls didn't hit them in stride. Joey just makes sure he puts air under the ball. Plenty of film on him completing deep balls and a few the receiver has to slow down a little or he draws a flag. Joey is the returning leader in deep ball completion percentage in P4 football.

Yes one is JA last season and the other is Dobbs but I am not sure what your point is. Dobbs faced some of the best teams in the country and the other faced Sunbelt competition so it is apples vs oranges.

I never said JA wouldn’t be a gamer I said nothing he has done in the past indicates he will be in the SEC. We all hope he will be but only time will tell but unlike some on here who have him wining the heisman I am remaining optimistic and realistic.

Few positives on the secondary in the 2-minute drill since it’s all doom and gloom in here:

1.) Edrees Farooq is ascending at safety opposite Turrentine

2.) McCoy looks better and is doing more in practice than anyone expected at this point

3.) We could be legitimately 4-5 deep at CB this year with Ty Redmond emerging for real playing time and not just mop up duty

Huge because we finally have a chance to be really good against good competition. Last year we were good but this year we have ability to take another step forward. Put that with Front 6. I like. In CHRIST Alone

But your liable to get a PI call. Overthrows especially on open throws are wasted plays. Most times the db is running with his back to the ball to even intercept. GBO

Wrong. Josh Dobbs couldn’t hold this guys jock. Went 8-6 in the Mountain West, played roughly equal competition

So no, not apples and oranges.

Any decent DB, not looking at the ball, is taught to react to a receiver's movements and them slowing, starting to drift back, is a sign the ball is probably going to be in 50-50 territory.

Sure, you could get the PI or they could get the PI. Granted, usually it goes to the offense.

You could also get a turnover or incompletion by the DB making a play.

I don't like balls thrown so the DB only has to turn to have a reasonable shot at the ball. I see your point but I'd never want my QB to err on the side of short throws.

These reports mean little to nothing. You’d have to have an insider who is in the closed portions to get any real idea.

Someone said the interior OLine got shoved around in the scrimmage. You won’t see that from Hubbs or any of these other mouth pieces. Satterwhite is another example of a developmental player that can’t get with it. A center who struggles with o snap the ball. Seriously??

Pendleton will start and Perry will move to guard.
I haven’t heard this at all. I heard it was an impressive showing from the O line. The RBs were impressive. But the passing game has a long ways to go.
