Vols Fall Practice #9

Somewhere in a parallel universe where Nico spurned our recruiting efforts 3 yrs ago, Ty Simpson is taking 1st team reps in practice preparing for his first start as a Vol. In this one, he's preparing for his first start at Alabama. I think we would have been better off, if it had played out that way.

Pope is listed as the Receiver Offense Analyst 21-22 season then AC 22- present. So involved
Yeah no doubt Pope was here in some role from the beginning. I heard Burns in interviews emphasize ā€œif the ball is in our wingspan, it’s oursā€. Then Tilman and McCoy showed that on the field and it made an impression. Who knows - CB development appeared non-existent until Gibson and McCoy arrived and suddenly we are talented and two deep at both corners. Maybe Pope will turn it around.

Ty would be throwing to sophomore #17 who spurned bama for tennessee because he despises inbreeding.

Meh. I think everybody is getting too upset about QB practice reports. Aguilar is a gamer and he will be fine on game day. Let's not forget the Hooker's numbers didn't look that good compared to Milton until game day. If you want to worry about something, worry about the WRs. That may be a concern if they don't step it up.
I agree I think we will be fine at QB but the WR room is the one truly glaring weakness on this squad. Thin, experienced, and so far inconsistent. They will be the difference between a 10-2 to 7-5 season

I'm really surprised they retained Pope. Nothing against him but none of the receivers recruited under this coaching staff have done anything or turned into anything. Hyatt was recruited by Pruitt.

Like Squirrel white and Nimrod were huge disappointments to me.
If White balls out for FSU this season we have a serious problem with Pope. He may be the weak link with this coaching staff.

Slightly under thrown is often very good on deep shots. The receiver can adjust and DB’s will often interfere on slightly under thrown deep ball’s trying to catch up. Especially on the perimeter. Slightly over thrown over the middle of the field is a different story.
Agree and sightly underthrown balls leads to a ton of PI calls too

We better hope we can run the ball down people’s throats, because these QB’s ain’t it. Save us Faizon

The balls didn't hit them in stride. Joey just makes sure he puts air under the ball. Plenty of film on him completing deep balls and a few the receiver has to slow down a little or he draws a flag. Joey is the returning leader in deep ball completion percentage in P4 football.
And that's what has been missing in our offense the last two years. CJH will get you minimum 3-5 deep looks per game against anybody, but you got to hit 2 or 3 of them. Its the difference between beating Florida in OT and winning by two TD's. Georgia is the only team that hasn't had to commit their safeties to stop our run game. So the deep plays are there against everyone else, we just haven't made them consistently enough and that's Heupel's game. There are dozens of examples but one that comes to mind is when we hit Donte in stride on a post for a TD when the safety cheated down against Oklahoma early in the game. Had a similar play from the opposite side open again in the second half and overthrew Bru by a mile. You're not gonna get them all but its similar to a baseball batting average. Hendon was consistently 3 or 4 for 5. Joe and Nico 1 for 4 or ofers. If you're getting 14-21 points a game on splash plays you're hard to beat with our D. Hope Joey's the man.

Check their 40 times…they are suspiciously close to 4.75. So, yes! GBO!

What? No.

Have you watched both QBs play? This is one of the most bizarre claims I’ve seen on this board. Are you confusing Michael Vick with someone else?

Michael Vick was a 4.33. That was widely discussed when he played.

No, Mahomes and Vick are not in the same stratosphere of speed. Vick is probably the fastest QB in NFL history, Mahomes has average speed and that’s being generous.

I mean I get what you're saying but imagine the nerves. Imagine being 18 years old and QBing in front of 100k screaming fans. Probably takes some getting used to. It's a lot easier said than done.
Pavia adjusted…errr, wait…..

Yes šŸ˜† Vick was a sub 4.4sec guy in 40

The only starting QB in NFL history as fast as Michael Vick...maybe...is current Ravens QB Lamar Jackson. They both have elite NFL WR speed. Vick might be the biggest waste of talent I have ever seen other than Bo Jacksons hip injury cutting his career so short. When Vick went to prison for dogfighting, he was never the same player again. He may be the most talented QB to ever play in the NFL honestly. He was as fast as anyone in the league before prison...and a much better arm than Lamar IMO. What a waste. Who wants to watch dogs kill eachother man? You couldnt pay me to watch that. I like dogs better than people most of the time. GO VOLS

Anyone care to take a stab?

Let me know if Player 1 is a ā€œgamerā€
If 2016 is Dobbs (I don't have stats in front of me), then you are leaving out a very important factor- his 800+ rushing yards and 12 rushing TDs.

He wasn’t referencing Dobbs. Those numbers are for Josh Allen.

My point was there is no data to indicate JA will be a gamer in SEC play and he used Allen’s stats from Mountain West and his performance in the NFL to show previous years numbers do not matter.
