Vols Fall Practice #5

Freshman CBs Tim Merritt and Dylan Lewis look like players. I could see them being stars for us down the road. CB recruiting has been stellar the last few years despite most of them not being highly ranked.

Another freshman who has caught my eye is Ethan Utley. I didn't think he would be a factor for us but physically he's as impressive as Marion Dye. Another future stud.

We might look back at the 2025 recruiting class in a few years as being severely underrated. This looks like a top 3-5 class thus far to me not a class ranked 11th.

You know some of the vets are going to have less practice reps to insure they’ll be healthy come game time.

Might as well get ready for that. Some will be held out of scrimmage too..

All the people who scream holding all game long should have to watch the 3rd video on repeat. The idea is grab the man, on offense or defense, on the numbers and sling/shove him where you want him to go.
Are you talking about the TEs practicing blocking and releasing into a route or the defenders shedding blocks? Because neither one is what an OL should do

Yes. Earlier last week we saw the Line being told "Grab the jersey, it's right there!"

Every game thread we see guys screaming about holding on every play and most of it is the taught technique of grab and release/shed or getting it done on the inside by keeping the man in front of you with at least one hand on his numbers.

There are holds and guys being just wrestled down but to see a VN game thread you'd think everyone out there is a human praying mantis.

I saw a video of what appeared to be TEs fighting against press coverage or punt coverage players blocking then fighting free from the opponents punt return blocking. None were OL.

Seems as though our WRs and CBs are made of glass. Hope they are all minor injuries that they are being cautious with.

Respectfully, can't be trotting out guys like Weary at WR or McMurry at CB every other drive
Players are so big and fast these days, injuries are bound to happen.
I hope they stop the full contact drills early enough before the season starts
that players have time to heal.

Okay I wasn't worried about the WR situation until the last two practices but 5 healthy scholarship WR's is a problem and has to limit how we work during the fall camp.

How do we make it 12-13 games without one of them getting an injury or banged up?? I don't think it is possible and will really hamper the offense this year IMO.

You got to practice contact, if you don’t practice it your bound not to be ready and likely to get injured from not being ready for contact. I get being injury cautious but there is a balance. You can’t coddle just to coddle either. Not saying we are, to be a physical hard nosed team you got to embrace contact and conditioning. Personally I don’t think any of our players are that injured and expect all to be back soon. McCoy is the only one coming back off a true serious injury I believe. Nicks, bumps and bruises aren’t true injuries they are just part of the game. GBO

Interesting OL notes…our two deep at Tackle includes a Junior, two redshirt freshmen and a true freshman. Our two deep at center is a redshirt sophomore and a redshirt freshman…

NFL players are bigger and stronger overall and they have lots of contact in practices as guys compete for only 53 spots on the roster.

If players don't appreciate and endure contact well perhaps football at the SEC level isn't for them.

I recently listened to Ryan Day talk about how they've changed practice to involve less full go sessions of practice. Said it has helped with injuries tremendously (obviously)

RYAN DAY! Don't be listening to that guy. jk

At one time the staff kept up with the practice minutes a player had supposedly to not overwork players, not sure if that's still a thing or not

It's part of the reason they have those tracking vests on these days. To monitor each player with live tracking of heart rate, speed, sprints, how far they've run, etc. Need to use it.

That's a pretty easy concept to use when you're stacked deep with talent every year at most positions but most schools aren't in that position.

They lose very little from starter to next man up and they're not trying to evaluate and coach up a young or unproven room at several positions.
