On 104.5 The Zone, former coach Doug Mathews said that Butch and Jancek have been butting heads ("not in a bad way") for half the season or more, and the talk about Jancek leaving started back then. He believes it really is a mutual decision. He thinks the relatively low UT coordinator pay (about $500K plus bonuses) is possibly a factor.
As for having someone in mind, Mathews said he's pretty sure Butch wouldn't have pulled this trigger without having a pretty good idea who he's going to bring in. That Butch almost certainly has someone in mind, even if he maybe hasn't told anybody else.
Hehe, Mathews also said that no one is returning phone calls to him right now; lips are temporarily sealed on Rocky Top.
On Shoops, he said "he's certainly someone that Butch is aware of; on the other hand, he turned down an LSU job that was paying a lot more than Tennessee would." Says Vols would have to get into the $1M range to have a shot at Shoops. He seemed to be hinting the radio guys away from thinking in the Shoops direction.
p.s. Mathews does not think money's really a key issue. He thinks the AD will pony up for whoever Butch has in mind; just isn't sure that Butch believes he needs much more than the $500K-$600K already being spent on coordinators.
p.p.s. Mathews noted that the National Coaching Convention is next week, and that both Tennessee's new DC and Jancek's new home will be decided during that event, if not before. So within a week or so, we should know.
