I'll wait a lil longer into the season until I claim that the sky is falling.
Tonight was all on the player's. The coaches aren't the one who let the DL penetrate the pocket. The coaches aren't the ones who were passing the ball inaccurately. The coaches aren't the ones who missed 3 field goals. The coaches aren't the ones who notched at least 9 penalties. The coaches aren't the ones who fumbled in UCLA's redzone.
This team isn't full of boys, so stop babying them and blaming the coaches. These weren't little inexperienced freshmen being thrown to the wolves. Practically the entire offense returned from last year's group, and the DEF really only has inexperience at SLB and LE. The reason people are freaking is because the game should have been UT's, and the players (along with some shady PAC 10 officiating, not to be cliche and blame the refs) gave the game away. I think most Vol fans thought this game was won before kickoff, and were anticipation the "SEC Speed" remarks during the SportsCenter highlights. And when the team loses, then we'll need a miracle to make a bowl game!
Think about how many points were kept off and put on the board due to player error. Lincoln's missed FG's. Foster's fumble in the redzone. Cunningham and blockers allowing a punt block for a TD. Plus, all the penalties on experienced players. I'm not saying the coaching staff shouldn't receive any blame. They do, but the players deserve more.
Yeah, it sucks during the short term. But I think it's good in the long term. The team flops on national television, and will now have to deal with the bitter aftertaste for two weeks. They'll be motivated to fix their flaws, and I expect them to shalack UAB. UCLA overachieved tonight, and that was expected as they're at home and are breaking in their hyped up coaching staff. It wasn't a blow out. We all agree that we played terrible in the 2nd half, UCLA played a near perfect half, and the game still went into OT. If you expect to win by at least 3 TD's in games like this, then you're just setting yourself up for disappointment.
