We will not start with the damage Hamilton did. But Kiffin trying to look tough, ran off or lost recruits in the tune of about 45 players. That is why Dooley never had a full roster of 85 till the end. He took over from a complete scorched Earth that Kiffin left him. No Coach anywhere would have been successful at Tennessee following the Hamilton disaster and Kiffin. Regardless of how good or bad you think Dooley is, he was in a no win situation. For those of you that call him dumb, well he is smarter then all of you combined. And much richer also. Every time you utter the initials VFL, thank Dooley as he created that. He may not have been a fit and coaching may not be his thing, but Lane is what ruined the program and Derek is certainly far from dumb.

You make good points but Dooley didn't bother signing a single O-Lineman in his final class. That is the definition of incompetence.

Plus the most glaring thing I saw during Dooley's tenure was that his teams just flat out quit on him. For all of Butch's flaws you can say his teams played hard for him up until midway through his final season. Dooley's teams usually didn't bother to come back out of the locker room at halftime.

Butch was in over his head. Dooley was just flat out incompetent.

Right before 2013 signing day, the TFP here in Chattanooga did an article on him. Bell was complimentary of Tennessee, said he liked Butch and the guys who were recruiting him, and said he was strongly considering Tennessee. They then asked him about Dooley and how his staff had recruited him, and he said he hadn't talked to anyone at Tennessee when Dooley was there.

Butch almost got him despite him not even being recruited at all by the previous staff.
