Very early observations on QB....

Nb4 CuzinGreazey breaks with “Chryst is for realz! Hopsauce on my OshKosh!”

In fairness Greazy was right about Murphy (per that diving back of the endzone catch for JG) that he said Brandon told him.... Lol

I'm sure there were plenty of teaching moments to be had for all of the QBs today

Agreed and it's honestly how the QBs respond coming out of the film room that matters. That will show if a guy is getting it or not. So it'll be interesting to hear upcoming reports.

From what I read from the article, Ubben stated that Chryst was better then what was reported and that through the day the QBs were both pretty equal. He stated that JG basically doesn't put touch on his ball and Chryst knows when to put touch on the ball and when to throw a strike.

It was very even for yesterday. I think he stated Chryst was fluid in his transition from receivers which is completely different then what simonton stated. He said JG had trouble with progressions. Again completely different then what simonton said.

So......

@butchna
Sounds like a professional difference of opinions...pending full investigation.

Yeah, it’s a little concerning that JG is already the favorite to win the job. Is Chryst that far behind or is JG actually improved?
I hope that JG is that improved but am highly skeptical after last years consistently bad performances and his whole game day mental state.

But but we were told he has the best "arm talent" in the SEC!!!

In fairness he said that's just JGs style but, I do believe you have to know when to take something off the ball, no need to throw a strike from 5yds away if you don't have to.

Tell that to Brett Farve, lol. I do think your right though, not every play needs to be a bullet pass. Overall, it’s too early to be breaking down every single throw from camp from our qbs. Honestly, until they get into full pads I’m not interested what any of
Them is doing. Put the pads on and get a rush from the defense going and then let’s see who’s the best capable startin QB. Guys change once you go full pads, some get
Better, while others lose a step in some instances. One thing I will say from the early camps, Shrout has a cannon arm and Alontae Taylor is gonna be a real deal CB for us.

Agreed and so is Thompson.... His first actual practice with the team since he wasn't here in the spring and had a pick.... That's pretty impressive.

Sounds as though he's improved. It speaks volumes to the pass pro and check downs also. Helton seems like he's gonna do well for us with his play calling as he learns our QB's strengths and weaknesses.

Yeah I'll agree with that in 11 on 11s. Then again he is what 2 or 3 months behind Guarantano on these plays and reads? It'll come to him in more practices to make those deeper throws, hopefully he makes the adjustment after this practice. Thats what film is for. It's only the 3rd practice.

It's been reported that Chryst already knows the playbook. Stanford ran similar Pro Style sets, so that's not far fetched as it may seem. Plus, he's been here for the summer and it's not his 1st rodeo. He'll be fine, but it sounds like JG is progressing well. This practice was a valuble experience for the QB's as well as the satff in determining who are ball players and who's going through the motions.

Agreed. Coaches will see the players making the adjustments after leaving the film room. Especially in the QB area. I would only assume that the guys who will start are the guys who connect it all and start translating on the field consistently after each practice and film session.

Being at the open practice the leader in the clubhouse is JG. Chryst almost gave the too laid back vibe. I mean I get it. Hes an older guy and this is just practice. Although he did not really seem to have the same pop JG had. Side note almost all of the players were very responsive during fan day with the exception of Chryst and Mcbride.

This 100%, who the starting QB will be will show itself when we're in full pads, what they did last year means nothing and the passing without pressure doesn't either. You bring the heat and see how they react to it. I will say I've watched both and it really doesn't matter to me who starts I think either will get the job done. Manage the game don't turn the ball over, we're going to run the ball to set up the pass neither will be asked to do too much. Just my 2 cents

Five standouts (IMO) from Tennessee's open practice: 1. CB Alontae Taylor 2. OLB Jonathan Kongbo 3. QB Jarrett Guarantano 4. TE Dominick Wood-Anderson 5. WR Cedric Tillman
Simonton

Most of these are no surprise, but happy to see Cedric Tillman's name on the list. Right now, our depth at WR is still pretty weak. Better than last season, but we really only have 3-4 guys who are quality SEC receivers (Jennings, Callaway, B. Johnson, and maybe Josh Palmer). Finding another 1-2 WRs that can be solid contributors in the 2-deep would be huge.

Thanks Fingers et al for the great videos!

Based on the new scrimmage videos posted later today, if I had to pick a guy that looked pretty good so far at QB, it would be Shrout. He did throw a pick, but so did the other guys. Here are just a few things I noticed:
- He has a controlled leadership presence about him.
- His play action fakes were much better than the rest. The other guys were just just going through the motions.
- He was pretty accurate with all his passes.
- He appears to be more dialed in to executing the offense than the others....

Details win or lose games. Shrout definitely won this category today. Not crowning anyone King just yet, just liked what I saw from him today.
Everybody loves the QB w/ zero game snaps. When the pads are put on and some tackling is allowed, we’ll see who lasts.

But JG has a "live arm" hahah, okay..... My preference would be to play the guy with the most accurate arm.

And after a full season (and for many reasons, including protection + sideline behavior), the QB(s) with all of the game snaps have yet to reveal reasons for everybody to love the QB(s) with all of the game snaps -- and THAT seems to be why so many seem to favor the QB w/ zero.

Ouch. Its going to be a looooooooooooooong seasons.
I don't agree... The people who have hyped Chryst will be disappointed but Guarantano will be solid. Up until this season, JG has been held back by bad coaching and a bad OL. That has changed.

Unless I happened to be looking at something else every time he did it, this is inaccurate.

It was from either day 1 or 2 practice report. He may have shined at open practice. I hope he does great, but his biggest weakness has been INTs.

Simonton isn’t even a Vols fan and has never championed Guarantano. Rutherford is a devoted Vols homer and has never championed either QB. Ubben seems to know his stuff and is a major reason I’m considering subscribing to the Athletic. It just might be possible that 3 different people saw what they saw and two of them agreed with each other.

What you say makes it sound like a boxing judge panel. That's why they use three. Only they hardly ever seem to "get it right". Much like the three guys in your post.

I also agree that it'd be nice if JG could develop some touch, but another example of a successful QB with little touch is Josh Dobbs. I'm not saying JG will be as good as Dobbs, but I do think he can be a better passer.

It's crazy how different all of these reports are. Just more evidence that Tennessee's quarterback situation is a real mystery.
