Very disturbing...what kiffin didnt say

If he had said we would win the SEC next year, he would have lost allot of credibility. He did the right thing.

With all the studs he's bringing in on D (monte, coach O and Steele), UT should easily win 9 games next year, and maybe 10-11 the following year.

Why would he straight out and say that we are going to be winning championships? Is he clairvoyant? Can he see the future? I am reminded of when Joe Bugel took over the HC job of the Oakland Raiders in the mid 90's. At his presser, he said something to the effect of: "I didn't come here to make the playoffs. I didn't come here to go to the Super Bowl. I came her eto win the Super Bowl, and that's what we're gonna do." He promptly went 4-12, was fired, and Al Davis hired Jon Gruden. There are no positives to setting up such lofty goals right now. Let him concentrate on winning games and the championships will come.

I have to say im almost offended that not 1 time in the press conference did i hear clk say that we are going to be competing for championships. In fact, when asked about expectations, he said something along the lines of the wins will come in time. How about making a statement to the country and letting every recruit out there that we expect to win championships here at tennessee. Somehow he manages to call out urban meyer and florida but doesnt have the guts to not accept losing.

It sounds like clk is thinking this is more rebuilding than refining and doesnt think were gonna compete for the sec next year. I dont like that right from the gate. I think today was the day to make a statement to the whole country that Tennessee is coming. Instead we got somebody who seemed scared to put his neck on the line

Slow down Cess and go back and listen to the conference. He said plenty of positive things on winning he just said he doesn't think throwing a number out there proves anything. As far as the rebuilding goes thats not too far off, why do you think he told the returning players that every position on the field is open. He wants the best on the field, that results to a desire to winning.

i thought he said a lot of the RIGHT things yesterday, time will tell if he is what we think he is or not.. can hardly wait for spring ball to see what they have installed

We finally get our coaching "messiah", and some people are already sharpening the nails they're going to crucify him with. What a wonderful world.

A coach's first year is what it is. These kids, many of them still befuddled by Clawson's cerebral (read: confusing) offensive scheme, are going to have to learn yet another offensive scheme. The defense has a whole new package to learn. And who knows - special teams may even get some attention for once!

I'm not expecting a 5-7 or even 6-6 first year, as I believe we could have a solid eight wins. If we don't, I'm not going to be grabbing my pitchfork and lynching shoes and preparing to sacrifice Kiffin at the altar of ridiculous expectations. That's not fair to him, his staff, or the kids playing for him.

when kiffin was asked about expectations, he should have said that we expect to win the sec next year. It just sets the tone from day 1 and puts everybody on watch. i thought he handled that 1 very bad but i did think he came off pretty likeable for the most part. i just would have liked to see him say CHAMPIONSHIPS

That is interesting you would have that opinion. See, that is the reason why I was drawn to him after yesterday... because he didn't go the conventional coachspeak route. Let's be honest... on paper, this is not an SECCG team. Plus, he asked for patience from the fans.

Why should he make an a$$ out of himself on the first day? He's got 3-5 years to do that. No need to go this route...

Well, seeing as how you "almost feel offended" I'm sure CK regrets every word and will try to do much better in your eyes from now on.

Seriously, get a clue

I'm just happy that Kiffin is being honest with us.

I'd be pissed if yesterday involved a cheer leading coach pumping UT's nuts talking about how many championships and accolades he was going to bring to UT before he'd even had a chance to settle in and get his hands dirty. At the time of the conference, he had not gotten a chance to have hands-on involvement with the players to see what he was dealing with. Not only that, but he hadn't even finalized his coaching staff and plans for just the next week. Why would he promise us something 3 or 4 years down the road when he's not even sure about the next 3 to 4 weeks?

I think that Kiffin will continue to be honest with us and the players about the progress of this team and let us/them know what position is poor and what position we can lean on for leadership and/or support. I don't think he's going to throw the players under the bus or anything like that, I'm just saying that he doesn't seem like the type to tell the vol nation that the whole team is "one play away" or "looking good" when they're not.

It seemed like he was trying to establish a basis of honesty with the Vol media and fan base yesterday and I'm very supportive of that. I don't want to hear great news unless it's factually great news. Kiffin won't fabricate a bs blanket to throw over our eyes.

He better win the SEC, not just the East within two years, three at most. And winning the East and not the SEC is absolutely nothing. If he does that he is no better than Phil.

He said it at about 21:00 in the press conference, when he was talking about recruiting Tennessee high school players. OP doesn't know what he's talking about.

It's always good to keep in mind that stating your opinion can, and most definitely will, influence the validity of your future posts.

where can i get a pair of those?

seriously though, the Kiff-O-Matic is goin to be a great coach, hes putting together a steller staff and i think hes going to be able to recruit. I mean honestly, how many coaches after one day on the job already have steve spurrier whining? everytime spurrier cries an angel gets their wings, and i think with Kiff, the population is going to grow exponetially

I guess you missed the part where he said kids should be coming to Tennessee to win championships

Kiffin said he's going to outwork all the other SEC coaches---that's all he needs to say.

With the talent level going up and the best players on the field we should see good improvement immediately. I don't know if that will translate into a great W-L record next year, but it certainly will in following years. Things are certainly looking up and we can all be excited that a new attitude will be showcased on the gridiron.

When Richt was hired at UGA he was asked how they compared to FSU. He didn't want huge expectations right out of the gate, therefore he told them that UGA was way behind FSU at the time.

He said he wants to be here a long time, and he knows he can't do that without winning the SEC in due course.

he knows he has to win championships, it's not something that he has to come out and say. he was smart in what he said and he was realistic, unlike the guy who started this ridiculous thread. seriously this is pathetic. one last thing it's K-I-F-F-I-N. learn how to spell his name

Face it---with Kiffin's knowledge of the game and with his Dad coaching the D, UT will be dominating the SEC every year, very soon. It's a matter of time and getting a few studs from recruiting.

he reportedly said this in an interview after the press conf:

"Coach Kiffin, how does Tennessee catch up with Florida and Alabama, who have stronger programs?"

Lane:"I don't agree they have stronger programs. That's your opinion."

A rare case of a loser actually talking like a loser. Sad, but true. There won't be championships at Tennessee. Not under Kiffin anyway.
