i knew they were bad.....i just can't fathom a Nebraska team that was THAT bad on defense......

i guess the good news is they're in the big 12 north....the road back shouldn't be as long as some others.....

Hat, how far away from being nationally competitive is Miami? Florida ought to beat them this year, but I've thought that in the past and been hugely disappointed. I do think Florida ought to be able to handle them this year, I really do.

But in two years?

Is Miami on its way back or is this fleeting excitement down there?

P.S. I won't ask you what you think of them being in the ACC as a factor against long-term success. But if you care to comment ....
Florida should beat Miami by at least two touchdowns this season. The 'Canes will be improved this year, ready to compete for an ACC title next year, and will have sufficient talent and experience to have National Title aspirations '10. The ACC is certainly deeper than the Big East was, but if the "U" is taking care of their own backyard in recruiting in the manner they should, it won't matter.

Actually, I think the North may be deeper than the South in the Big XII. See Kansas State's victories over Texas the last two years and Colorado's '07 win over Oklahoma.

i would say that applied to Kansas more so than Mizzou.....for last year......

Missouri was the subject when I responded but I believe they both were. While both were good solid teams I don't believe either of them were what I would call elite, and I would expect them both to disappoint this this year.

Ask Ohio State about Illinois.
Mizzou and Illinois played each other last year didn't they? and if memory serves.......mizzou won?

i can't put long term faith in KSU or Colorado....both teams have been really bad recently....to me it'd be like saying the same of KY and VAndy because of recent success against LSU, GA and TN.....

the phrase "sh*t happens" comes to mind.....:p

That indeed seems to be the key. They had really lost ground in recruiting in South Florida, from what I'd read. Seems like the Glades area could open up for them, too, as Bowden fades.

Or, something more relevant - ask Illinois about Missouri.

Not to mention the fact that we're dealing with different teams than were on the field last year...
Yeah, Missouri won a game played in St. Louis on a 99 yard fumble return, with Juice Williams missing a substantial portion of the game. I bet the Illini are petrified.

Name the last time Baylor or Oklahoma State beat anyone of consequence.

well that's fair, but OK and TX both have been relevant to the national college football scene for the last decade.....and let's not get crazy, i'm not arguing the relative strength of the Big 12 to the SEC......it's not really close, we both know that....the room for upward mobility exists for teams like Colorado and KSU more so than it does for KY or Vandy, i do know that......

and didn't Ok State beat Bama in a bowl game or something? not that that's relevant to anything.......

Colorado is now coached by Dan Hawkins. He took a train wreck of a team, got to 6-6, and lost by less than a TD to the mighty Tide in their bowl game. Along the way he managed to beat OU with a clearly inferior team. They outgained the Sooners 381 to 230.

He followed that up with the #15 recruiting class according to Rivals. When he gets some one better than his son to play QB then they'll be competitive.

You've got to remember that they are not saying that these other teams with lower odds are better than UT. They are saying that they have a better chance to win the BCS.

Big difference.

I know a lot of people are picking Clemson to do well in 2008 which is usually the kiss of death for a second-tier program, but I honestly am jumping on the bandwagon this year. Not that I like Clemson, but I really do think they are going to good this year. I think they win the ACC and make a BCS bowl. I mean if they get past Alabama they have it made until October. They have South Carolina State, and Citadel along with NC State, and Maryland who both lost a lot and should suck again this year. Also both of those ACC games are at home. October could be a little harder @ Wake Forest, and Georgia Tech at home. Wake lost a lot of key players at WR, O-line, and D-line. And its not like playing @ WF is intimidating lol. Georgia Tech has no playmakers whatsoever, and lost a ton on defense. They are young at LB and in the secondary. They also have a new head coach. November could be a little tricky with games @ BC and @ FSU. BC lost more than anybody and will not be as good as last year bottom line. FSU on the other hand returns a lot of letterman and a lot of talent. I could see a Clemson loss @ FSU there. November is self explanitory with games against Duke, Virginia, and South Carolina. Duke is an easy win at home, Virginia is a win (key players kicked off team), and South Carolina is @ Clemson this year and by this time USC is usually pretty beaten up after the SEC schedule. Not to mention they are just not as talented as Clemson. I expect Clemson to finish the regular season with no more than 2 losses and they will make a BCS bowl. If Clemson's offensive line can play decent this year they could be very very good, and they don't have to play VT or Miami unless its in the title game. It just seems like it all fits this year for the tigers. I got 5 on it...

Sorry, no dice. It's a nice thought, but Illinois is going to struggle even more mightily with Missouri this year. I don't expect Mizzou's defense to have a near meltdown again, either.

Sometimes it's fun to be a contrarian, but the Illini will be heavy underdogs this year - for a reason.

I think Mizzou is a program here to stay, b/c there in the freakin' big 12 north. Vandy and Kentucky would be successful in the big 12 north. Idk a/b Kansas, but they'll be one of those teams that win 8-9 games a year and doesn't mind. But i think Mizzou is for real
