The only way any coach gets canned this season is for a comment he made 6 years ago, wearing a shirt with an unacceptable message ,being hurtful to a player or a similar action.
I don't see anyone getting let go for onfield performance this year.
I don't understand why they would opt out? Vandy has been a leader in infectious disease protective measures. Their fan base has been 6' social distancing at home games for nearly 40 years now.
Covid and SEC only schedules will be the excuse that ADs use to postpone firing hot seat coaches with large buyouts (Muschamp, $18m buyout?). Not sure what Mason buyout is but I would imagine not nearly that much.
IF the conference says "GO"...hold the season.
IF the University fields a team and a player "OPTS OUT"....does that player surrender his scholarship, and open a scholarship spot for someone who will play..?? This "opting out" when the team is going to be playing...looks a lot like quitting the team.
Football is a dangerous sport for all kinds of reasons besides a China virus that might cause a player to "opt out" to protect their health. Do those players keep their scholarship and prevent the team from acquiring someone willing to accept the inherent risks in college football..??
Not a surprise as the Vandy students/athletes are supposed to be smarter than mostrolleyes. I expect players are dropping out because they feel it will be more likely to catch C-19 than win a football game!!!
