Va Tech hires James Franklin

Franklin will probably do great at VT. I never liked the guy, just a prick, but he got results. And the talent to content with is much easier. SEC has 14 of the top 25 schools talent wise, talent everywhere to compete with. Big Ten had Ohio State and Oregon with more talent than Penn State to face every year. But the ACC only has one team in the top 10, Clemson which is struggling, then Miami at 15. If he can bring Techs talent up to Penn State level, top 10, he literally will have little competition, if he continues winning the games his team was suppose to win talent wise.

Good hire for VT. they aren't going to be expecting championships like pedd state.

seems weird move for Franklin, VT was at best the 4th best job open. I guess the ACC is easy to win in, and low expectations relieve stress for Franklin. but otherwise I don't see the appeal.
I guess the better jobs didn't want him. They may wish they had him after they figure out there aren't 4 or 5 Kiffins, but I doubt it.

I didn't think about it before, but wasn't Brent Pry-their last coach-from Franklins "tree" at Penn State?

Bold move to take two bites of the same poison apple, but you do you Hokies
Correct. Pry was a good guy but a crappy coach. Hope we don’t learn that Franklin is the other way around.

Great hire from them. I honestly think Florida and LSU are dumb fighting for Kiffin when Franklin was right there available
You could make a pretty good argument that Franklin would’ve been the 2nd best head coach LSU would’ve had since 2000 if he had gone there. Obviously, the landscape of college football has changed dramatically even since Orgeron was there, but from an X’s and O’s and longevity standpoint I think most would take him over Miles, Orgeron and now Kelly. It’ll be interesting to see where they land. I think Franklin will do well in Blacksburg bc it’s not hard to come in and have an immediate impact in the ACC. There’s no other conference where a team from the American Conference could come in and go undefeated in their first season the way SMU did last season. Franklin should be able to come in as the coach with the second most prestige behind a fading Dabo.

10 times the coach Kiffin is. I hate the dude too but he averaged 9 wins at Vanderbilt it felt like
Yea but he had 9 wins a year during a mediocre time in the SEC East and those schedules were very weak. VT is perfect for him cause he’s a slightly above average coach getting jobs where the ceiling is gonna be 2-3rd best in the conference

ESPN will hyperventilate over the hire, as they are STILL in Virgina-Tech-hyping-mode 20 years after Vick.

Its a crappy little program, with zero football tradition. However, the ACC is weak as heck, as everyone knows. The expectations have thankfully returned to earth after those few years when ESPN convinced the fanbase they were a legitimate power, so a coach can survive there winning 7-9 games a year.

I like Metallica, but let's face it, when your 'tradition' is based on your team coming on the field to "Enter Sandman", you have to accept you've got nothing in that area.

Then again, it's more tradition than uga has, so there's that! :)

I like the Enter Sandman entrance, I can recall thinking it was pretty cool the first time I saw it. Not the worst thing to get a crowd pumped and ready to go.

Franklin is a great hire for them. Will it pay off? Perhaps not to the extremes, but I think they will be better for having him. Who knows though, he is a good coach, and it’s not like the ACC is near the gauntlet that the SEC is. He might do very well there in time.

So you think UGA has little tradition? That’s cool, but it does show a bit of ignorance. Not meant really as an insult bc why would you know or care about our traditions, but we do have our own traditions and they do run deep.

Yet, even as a GA fan I do appreciate the Vol traditions. Some are arguably even more iconic than our own or certainly more well known at the least. I hated Rocky Top as a kid, I know it’s a wonderful song but even today it brings back sad memories😂. The checkered end zones are pretty cool, and although more recent, checkering Neyland is an awesome new tradition.

My point is we all have our own, and more often than not, a rivals traditions will always pale in comparison to one’s own.

My son graduated from Virginia Tech in 2021. We were able to make it to several games during his time there. Enter Sandman for a big game rivals any intro anywhere.

Very cool, and while I’m not a VT fan, I would absolutely love to attend at least one home game and experience that in person. I’ve watched it live several times and always thought it was cool. Hell, it got me pumped up from my home Gameday seat, which is my very comfy recliner!😂

This really worked out for Franklin and VaTech. Franklin is an upscale hire for the Hokies, and I think Franklin makes the Hokies relevant again within 3 years.
Lots of Vol Fans really dislike Franklin, but he is a very good coach and CEO of the program.

Since I lived there I went to a lot of VT games in the 80s, even slug cokes for a few games. Attendance back then was so bad they gave away tickets or would just let us kids in without a ticket.
