Va Tech hires James Franklin

I think this is a good hire for VT. They get a proven winner. Yes, he has a ceiling, but most good coaches learn their lessons as they move through their career arc, and Franklin is young enough to rebuild his image here. I get a "Vandy 2.0" vibe from this hire. He will have more talent, resources, and support than he got at Vandy, and obviously less than he got at PSU. He'll have VT playing tough football in 2 years, if not sooner.

I still think it was a combination of egos and temperatures in the room that doomed him at PSU. They may well end up regretting showing Franklin the door; Franklin is probably secretly glad to be out of there; and the "Ghosts of Sandusky" still have me hoping that PSU goes 4-8 for many years to come.

I think Lane wants the LSU job. I just think the mess surrounding that job has him scared. But I think deep down it’s the one he wants and I’ve thought that since the moment it came open. His kids want to stay in Oxford but I think he wants to be in Baton Rouge.

Franklin is a good hire for Va Tech imo

Getting one branch from the tree is a lot different than getting the whole tree....roots and all.

LSU I think maybe has other high end options other than Lane. But for UF, if they miss out on Lane, they are probably looking at Drinkwitz, another G5 coach, or Jedd Fisch. All of which would make their fans riot, lol.

VT is simply not gonna get top notch guys to Blacksburg. Even now with NIL they just don't have the money to be a big player

They won under Beamer using the Wisconsin model of being gritty, running the ball and playing stout defense

Is that gonna get you to the playoffs? Nope. But it is the key to winning 7-9 games a year

Franklin at PSU won on talent alone. They beat who they were supposed to beat and lost to who they were supposed to based purely on talent

Franklin is good coach. And more than that, he has a track record of developing players for the NFL. He's 10x better than any coach they have had in the last ~15 years.

Franklin was the best case scenario for VT. Their only other options were to take a gamble on another coordinator or a G5 coach. And the top G5 coaches (Mullen, Sumral, SIlverfield, and Golesh) are probably going to have their pick of teams for the most part, and VT likely won't be at the top of any of their lists.

I think there are only 2 fallback hires that would be considered "splashy" if Lane stays put for Florida / LSU / Auburn. That is Drinkwitz and Lincoln Riley if he really is rumored to be on the move from USC. I think Riley will stay at USC if they finish 10-2. But if they go 9-3, he is another one that will be involved in this coaching cycle.

This is why I hate this new era of college ball being a playoff or bust sport. Once you get elminated with 3 losses, your coach could very well be among the top of the coaching carousel cycle talks.

It's why UT fans should be nervous with Heup. There really isn't much holding him here, other than him being a strong culture guy. But at some point, there will be an opening that may be too good for him to pass up.

Man he's a great hire for the Hokies, but two years to turn around that dumpster fire when they just don't have the resources to stop everybody from raiding the state's best talent is just silly.

Good hire for VT. they aren't going to be expecting championships like pedd state.

seems weird move for Franklin, VT was at best the 4th best job open. I guess the ACC is easy to win in, and low expectations relieve stress for Franklin. but otherwise I don't see the appeal.

How many top 25 teams are in the ACC ? All Duke had to do was beat UVA (sucks) UNC (sucks) and Wake (sucks) to get into the ACC title game as a 4 loss team. So yeah it’s not hard to be a CFP contender in the ACC.

Solid Verbal guys (if I remember right) kind of theorized that it could almost be a revenge spot for him, what with Penn State and VT sharing a lot of the same recruiting ground. I can see that.

To be honest it's not that bad of a gig. Southwest Virginia is beautiful, the pressure- especially after the last several years- is going to be low, and he's going to have time to turn around the ship.
