'26 VA RB Savion Hiter (Michigan commit)

No. Everyone in the program was given a talk on what gets shared and what doesn’t. I’ll respect confidentiality when asked, as will others. It leaked out several channels. I don’t think it changed the outcome, but his family didn’t like it.

If his family didn’t like it, that just tells me he was never coming here and they likely didn’t want the wrong message being received because they certainly didn’t care how much was leaking from the Michigan camp the final two weeks.

I got the scoop. It’s medium boring. He was all Michigan until July. He grew close to a few of our players, and talked to them often. He loved being drivable to home and had a connection with Heuple and DeRaill. He started to second guess his decision to go to Michigan. His agent asked him if he wanted to do one more meeting with us to find out if he was making the right choice. He did. It went great. After that meeting he told our coaches he wanted to be a Vol. We changed our NIL structure to line up with the one Michigan offered. At this point, staff, others believed he was rock solid to us. A few days after my post AP said he believed we had the momentum. He told Michigan he was coming here and cut off talking with them. His mother was getting calls from Michigan and she vented to the coaches and said her son’s decision was not final and she didn’t appreciate people saying it was. He and his agent would not answer calls from Michigan. Sherrone kept on him and something happened in the last two weeks. I assume more money was offered, but don’t know. At this point he went silent with us. His agent kept talking to us, but it started to feel grim. I think his agent believed that this was the best destination for him and kept lines open, but somehow Michigan convinced the family otherwise. It’s a bummer, but I think we did everything we could. It doesn’t always go your way.
I always appreciate your posts and, since most others have been shunned away, I trust your insight the most. I view all this in the positive, aside from not getting him, obviously. We did everything we could, up to and including NIL restructuring, which means we don’t have the penny pinchers of old holding us back anymore. So the whole “this staff can’t close” BS is just that, 🐂 💩. Like you said, sometimes it just doesn’t go our way. Let’s use the money and go after some solid WR and I also wouldn’t mind a good defensive back.

I know Michigan is a run heavy team, but what great running backs have they put in the NFL? I can of a few that were decent, but not necessarily "great".

JMO, but if we're talking the last 40-50 years of football, I think we may have put better RBs in the league than Michigan. Do they have a back that would top Jamal?

IMO Michigan is a much better college program than they are producer of nfl talent. Their overall talent at collegiate level way better than the relative amount of players that have had nfl success.

I would struggle to name Michigan players that have had much nfl success outside of tom Brady and charles Woodson.

Bama falls into this camp too a bit just from the relative amount of college talent to nfl success comparatively.

The one program that imo has had consistent elite college football programs and consistently produced premier nfl talent would be OSU.

Honorable mentions:
Bama
USC
Texas
Notre dame

Id say Lsu, UGA, Tennessee, Florida, FSU, Miami, Oklahoma, Michigan have all had varied but significant amounts of college football success and nfl talent production.

^You could throw auburn and PSU long term, and more recently Oregon and Clemson in this group I suppose, but I would consider them a next tier. Along with maybe Wisconsin, Nebraska, GT, Pitt.

In Tennessee's favor, we produced one of the best NFL QBs of all time in Peyton Manning, and one of the best defensive players of all time in Reggie White. Plus lots of other good players.

Probably true, but it sure felt good in July. In my limited experience, parents can get really heavy-handed when kids change their minds. It’s less about whether the kid can handle a u-turn at 60mph, and more about whether they can. Sherrone is a very good recruiter. He just needed the door open a crack again.

I literally hate this clown. Most undeserving millionaire of all time.

Not a Portnoy fan myself either but he’s far from the most undeserving millionaire of all time. He started Barstool as a little newspaper and has grown it into a behemoth.

Anyone born into millions immediately top him as most undeserving.

Genuinely hopeful missing on Hiter means we focus on Georges in 2027 and hit the portal for a one year gap fill at the the end of the season.

I think Hiter is a great back. But there is something different about Georges. Maybe it's just the orange shades for a local kid.

I just feel like this is going to work out for us in the long run with the possibility of having the inside track to sign him in the '27 class.
I believe he is a RB with high potential. I would loved to have him join our 4 young backs next year and let the best man (men) win. I believe we WERE a serious contender and was hopeful but never confident. Just did not see our more connected folks sharing peer level recruiting late in the process. That is when I get invested, sometimes even stupidly cocky.

Love to know HIS analysis on the RB rooms at each school. Did he see more of a void to fill at any of them? NOT saying he was afraid of competition, but risk of competition and path to lead role has to be a factor. Possibilities vs probabilities with 4 underclassmen and the feedback he got from squad on visits about their varied skill sets may not have been a plus. Also have to wonder if he felt last years bell cow use of Sampson, or the previous years committee approach would rule future days. Fair question for a guy with his status. He was on our list of 1 for a reason.

So, as you said on to 27’ and key targets. Hoping this years results don’t ALSO trigger bringing in portal guys next cycle into that room. Can we go 3 for 4 or better? TBD!

Off the top of my head, the most "recognizable" Michigan alum currently in the NFL is probably Nico Collins, WR for the Texans. They do put plenty of guys in the NFL, but many of them play less sexy positions like TE, OL, and on the defensive side of the ball.

Several recent drafted offensive players who could draw them some notoriety are 2024 1st rd pick JJ McCarthy (QB) who sat out his rookie year with a meniscus tear, 2025 1st rd pick Colston Loveland (TE), 2024 3rd rd pick Roman Wilson (WR) who spent most of his rookie season injured.

He also sold Barstool for $551 million and then managed to buy it back for $1. He's also made his way back from bankruptcy in the last 20 years. I understand not liking him, but like you said, he's built what he has thru hard work and good fortune.

Yeah?

Thanks for losing Hiter for us.

You are the scenario where Arkansas didn’t fumble and in fact won the game in 1998
