Uts student section?

Yeah, I wonder if any other the games that came down to the wire would have had a different outcome... Just saying you get a bunch of drunk college kids screaming and yelling it makes a difference...

Just wondering, but what happened with Orange Nation that affected student attendance?

Before, everyone had a random chance of getting those awesome seats in the first couple of rows behind the bench. Now, one has to pay 40 bucks or whatever to be in the club to even have a shot at being within 8 or 9 rows of the field. In other words, it stratified the student body. Also, certain members of the club seemed to always end up with those coveted first row seats. The system was rigged. Also, the orange nationers tend not to be the rowdy sort to begin with. They don't sneak in the booze, they don't curse and try to fight opposing fans. They smile and put power T decals on their cheeks, and ask you to please not stand on the seats.

My freshman year, I went to every home game. I sat all over the student sections, and had a great time. The crowd was rowdy and edgy. The whole student body is now composed of sober kids with tucked in shirts and khaki shorts.

This is a prerequisite to being a "rowdy" fan?

My wife wonders why I hate kids. Not just hers for obvious reasons. Must be a generational thing.

Our student section was insane in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The Orange Nation and the no whiskey thing did not help our sections insanity. But what killed it in my opinion was the fact that we lost just about EVERY big game there from 2002 on.

Students used to take pride in feeling like they had something to do with the outcome of the game and that Neyland stadium was the most hostile environment the world had ever seen. By Fulmer's Vols losing big game AFTER big game at Neyland caused Rocky Top to lose it's "rep". But that's just my opinion.

when were students allowed to bring whiskey into Neyland? :p The fact students can't figure out a way to sneak it in anymore is really proves the "UT is admitting smarter students now" to be wrong.

You don't understand. Those dweebs don't WANT to sneak in liquor. Maybe an avion bottle...

There's a real possibility I have sat in the UT student section more times than anyone on Earth in the last seven years. The students themselves are just Nancy-pants compared to my early times of undergrad at UT.

There is a chance the new attitude of the coaching staff will bring back some football debauchery and college revelry to the section this year, though.

ah I see. Much different than when I was there (mid-late 90's) and the student gate looked like a Jim Beam factory from all the confiscated bottles.

And if you see anyone sneaking in a water bottle to the student section please punch them in the face for me

My freshman year (2002), you couldn't take a step after the first quarter without knocking over a glass airplane bottle. If you asked most of the students who Jim Beam was now, they would think it was the backup punter.

I hate sounding like a bitter alum, but Orange Nation did start the downfall in my opinion. Also the new "frat-tastic" attitude spreading through the student body, where it's all about being seen and dressing up like Auburn students do. They show up late, so that they can hang at the house longer. No excuse for being late to any games (no matter the sport) if you live on or near campus. But hey, that doesn't matter to them as long as they are seen. The whole "not winning excuse" means nothing to me, especially in basketball terms, considering the brand of basketball I sat through during my time there. I would love to be a student during the Pearl era. Try watching Brandon Crump instead of Tyler Smith. Vom.

Personally I think that if the football team does good then they might come out and support the basketball team. I wonder if they are stil mad about having to pay for student tickets for football? I was disgusted when UT played even some SEC schools and the student section had about 5 rows filled.. Im not saying being like the Cameron Crazys but just support your school.

Uh what? Me or my dad have never been checked for anything at all, even wearing shorts with like 15 different pockets in the past 5 years, and I haven't noticed a decrease in all of the mini liquor bottles left in the bathroom.
You've never been through student gates. It's like going through airport security. They'll even kick your boots to see if you have anything

Agreed, they'll do everything short of a full cavity search.

Also, that is part of the reason why the student section is always late. The won't start letting us in until 30 minutes before kickoff sometimes, and then a huge mob of a couple of thousand students are each being ridiculously painstakingly searched. I missed half of the first quarter of the Cal game a couple of years ago, when I had arrived 30 minutes before kickoff.

But it wasn't a total loss. They failed to find my booze, despite all that effort. *hint: hide it in your bloodstream.

Well, I can tell you that as soon as the Orange Nation got the good block seating it completely ruined the football student section. Half of the fun and rowdiness comes from the seats in front and moves throughout the stadium and when students had a legit shot at getting 4 tickets together for say the Florida, Bama, or Georgia game down low they were excited as hell to be sitting there and would get rowdy. Plus, no remotely cool people were in the Orange Nation because it was basically the dork squad. Also, they have cracked down on sneaking booze into games which is totally gay.

Well stated! The ON thing is a problem and they implemented it in TBA also...so the best student areas are blocked off for them and all other students can only get several rows from the court at best any given game.....What's the incentive?

Plus, half of the student allotment is in the UPPER DECK!!!! The AD decided to sell courtside completely out instead working in more students when they could double the people around the floor and accomodate both! Very poor handling of the students IMO.

False. ON has never had its own seating block for basketball.

The rowdies were physically absent from several games last year. They are not "great."

First of all, they don't charge for student tickets for the basketball games. I know this for a fact, I am a sophomore at UT.

The student section actually is full for several games, and is extremely active during big games such as Florida, Kentucky, and Memphis. Maybe one reason the students aren't as excited as they were in the past is lack of success? We might have decent teams every year, and maybe make it to the sweet 16, but the students aren't getting excited over this. We always seem to lose big games where the students got into it (at least we did last year), and that makes students not even want to go to less important games.

In my first 2 years at UT (06-07 and 07-08), we didn't lose a single game at home.

The student section has been embarrassingly sparse several times last year, too. "Extremely active" would not characterize the student section when it was even full, and I was sitting in it.

Also, you aren't going to make much of a case to older UT fans saying that there isn't enough success to keep fans interested. Two years ago was about as good as it has been in decades. I doubt Tennessee will be ranked #1 again for a long while.
